T'was the night before Christmas...

It was that time of the year, the time when Jangles would emerge from his summer home – a cardboard box in the attic – and get to roam free. Well, as free as he could with his hooves spiked into the ground. Excitement gripped him like the hands that pulled him free from the tree ornaments and strings of lights and carried him into the crisp December air.

As the man turned away to get the mallet, the reindeer took a deep breath as he lay on the ground, happy to be out of the dust and living his life once again. This would be his year for certain. He’d been so patient waiting year after year, hoping year after year. The man returned and drove Jangles’ spikes into the earth. Jangles head was turned to the sky but still he watched as the lights with whom he lived were hung in the trees and along the roof, and smiled Santa breathed into being a few feet away.

Days passed with the man and his wife and children hurried around about their business. At night, Jangles looked to the stars that were reflected in his own lovely evening coat of lights, wishing on each moving star, some of which even winked at him over and over, for his own Christmas wish to come true this year.

The days grew colder and the nights longer, and the man and woman carried more boxes each time they arrived home from wherever they went during the days. Jangles would have counted down the days from his freedom to the big night if he knew any numbers higher than the four hooves he stood on.

It was definitely more than four nights when the telltale jingling rang out one night. He turned to look toward the rooftop and watch his fellow reindeer land nimbly with their sleigh and the dream boxes they brought each year.

Oh please, oh please let this be the year,” he thought as he watched Santa’s more mobile twin move toward the smoke tower on top of the house.

“Evening, everyone,” Jangles called up to the roof. “Weather been nice tonight?”

Beside a single spare glance from Vixen, there was no reply. Perhaps he hadn’t been loud enough. Jangles didn’t get much practice with speaking as few others in the yard had ears to listen and he had to take care not to alert the humans anyway. Or perhaps there just wasn’t time as Santa returned from the house a few seconds later and climbed back into the sleigh, crumbles dotting his white beard. With a flick of the reins, the team moved on.

Jangles sighed sadly that this would not be his year as he watched the other reindeer fly off to the next house, and his head dipped down to the ground as they left the neighborhood entirely. In a few days, he’d be packed back up in storage to wait for the time the flying reindeer visited. He closed his eyes to the night.

Near dawn, the jingling stirred Jangles from his rest and he turned back to the sky as the reindeer team swooped low over his head. Eight pairs of eyes winked his way, and as the sleigh passed overhead, there was a flurry of dust that fell on Jangles’ head. One at a time, his hooves snapped from the stakes holding him to the earth, and the wires that held his position flexed and moved with his body. Hope filled the reindeer of lights as he took a running start across the yard, and as he reached the curb, he leapt into the sky, dancing and racing against the fading stars as he chased the team of furred reindeer back to the North Pole.
