Arachnids

You’re not frightened nor repulsed by me? As a spider, I’ve come to expect that you would be. Some species have harder lives than others, I suppose. Arachnids are no exception. My difficulties began as a young creature; as soon as we were born, my brothers and sisters went on their own way, and I was left alone. I was even smaller then than I am now, and yet so many people were afraid of me. I never understood it. Many spiders may try to be frightening, but this is only because they’re afraid like the rest of us. Spiders are actually quite delicate, and only a few species could do any harm. But I carried on, often being misunderstood for something I could not control. I learned to weave intricate webs by working hard and diligently, but it seemed there was always someone walking through them, then letting out an of disgust. My hard work would go to waste and fall gracefully apart against their limbs. Sometimes it was on accident, but more commonly, the person was purposefully destroying my home. I accepted my fate as a nomad. I had moved from a sycamore tree to a garage window, from a pot of pansies to an old bicycle chain, but I always knew my home was never permanent. That is, of course, until I met Crisgems. When she saw me, she didn’t scream nor run, she didn’t even try to crush me with the bottom of her shoe. Instead, she gently observed me, then scooped me up. At first I was very confused and honestly quite scared. I had never had this kind of attention before. She then took me home and cared for me - it took me a while to understand, but she had taken me for a pet.“Why,” I asked her, “why are you not like the others? Why do you love and accept me?”She explained to me how she related to my life as a spider, and thought, in some way or another, we were the same. I was very confused by this. How could I be like a human? Humans hated me! But then she continued, and I began to understand. She told me that as a child, she too was without brothers and sisters. She even had to move around, just like I did, due to her parents relocating because of what she called their jobs. I don’t know what a job specifically is, but I certainly can relate! She also told me of this wonderful book about a spider and a pig (which I hope she reads to me), that made her realize her sort of kinship to spiders. Since then, she has always wanted a spider companion. Now she has me! And I have her. Over time, our spider family has grown, and now I have siblings! They too had lived a life of being misjudged by their creepy-crawly nature. Now though, they are loved just as I am. With Crisgems, perhaps the life of a spider isn’t so hard after all.
