"Whenever people see birds flying through the sky, it's said that they get the urge to go on a journey."

Kino travels the world, visiting different countries on the back of their talking motorrad, Hermes. No matter how strange the country, they take care to respect its customs, while also maintaining the rule of never staying in a country longer than three days...

backstory

Kino was 11-years-old when she met the traveler Kino. At that time, she was still going by her birth name, of which the only thing she remembers is that it was the name of a flower which could also be easily turned into an insult. She had been made fun of a lot as a child for her name.

Her home country had the custom that once a person hits the age of twelve, they become an adult through an operation. According to this custom, children are allowed to do whatever they want, but adults have to do many things that they do not. Hence, the operation is performed to ensure that all adults can do their jobs with a smile, even if they hate what they're doing.

At the time she met the traveler, her twelfth birthday was in three days. While usually at this time (less than a week away from the operation) no one is allowed to speak to the child, the traveler, not knowing the rules, befriended her and inspired her to look beyond the small country she resided in.

However, when she asked her parents if she could forego the operation, her parents, drawing an audience, immediately gained permission to dispose of her as a flawed child. To save her, the traveler Kino takes the knife meant for her. In the confusion, she escapes on Kino's newly repaired motorrad Hermes.

When the motorrad asks her name, she says, "Kino." Since then, they have used gender-neutral pronouns to refer to themselves and have taken up being a traveler, in the same tradition of the original traveler they met.

Later, they also meet a Master who teaches them how to use guns and knives to defend themselves, but that's a different story for a different day.
