Today was probably the last she would feel winter's chill. The trees had already started sprouting new leaves and the sun left lasting warmth on her skin. It had rained the night before and the earth was damp, the air was fresh with a cool breeze. There was a sense of excitement and new life.

Yet she could not shake this feeling of worry.

In front of her the rune had grown dim and fuzzy. It looked like it had cracked yet she saw no sign of it, the delicate lines were perfectly drawn and thrumming with power. Worse, this was the 5th rune she had seen today and she still had many many more to check. It had only been a week since she was last out here doing her routine and she could swear that more and more of them were failing at an alarming rate.

Emptying her mind, she searched nearby for a node. There were hundreds in this area, possibly why this was chosen for its prison, she could feel them all pulsing softly in the back of her mind. She pulled at one gently with her mind and felt its power well within her, then using her pointer finger she began to draw. Replacing a rune was generally not an easy task but she had had years of practice, engraving the magic into the stone in front of her. Imbuing it with natures power, asking for its boon. Hoping that it would be enough.

When she was done she thanked nature for its help and dropped her hold on the node. The warmth left her, made her feel almost cold and weak. She could understand how people could get addicted to it. A dangerous thought. The new rune she had engraved glowed brightly before her, brimming with power as it should have before.

She would have to increase the frequency of her visits and monitor this area more carefully. She would enlist a few creatures for help. Why were the runes failing so quickly? Someone must be out her trying to sabotage the prison. Or worse, it was getting too strong to keep in.

That left a lasting chill down her spine that nothing else ever would. Winter had left, but something else more cold and dark might be on its way.
