Styx is a river named Hate, but it is also a goddess.
She was not always the road upon which the dead walked. For centuries, her icy waters churned down the side of a very treacherous mountain, alone. She was too cold to bathe in, to swift to cross, and too difficult to reach to be used as drinking water. Even animals wouldn`t draw near.
Through loneliness grew desperation. A small rest stop had sprung up near the base of a nearby mountain, and she had watched - at times weeping with desire, at times seething with jealousy - its visitors drink from a small and lovely nymph`s little stream for years, preferring it and the young nymph`s beauty over Styx`s.
One day, she could handle no more. With a massive effort, she heaved her waters away from its banks and stampeded toward the encampment. Though it had not been her intention, all was washed away in her flood. Even the nymph was killed, as she had frozen to death.
Though Styx wept terribly, the world to which her victims were sent was intrigued. The realm of the dead was still young, and though they had finally thought of a way to keep the dead from leaving, they had not yet been able to solve their second most pressing issue: how to keep the living out. Styx had proven herself not just capable of stopping any human and animal, but the immortal nature nymphs that had been selling their ability to pass the Hydra to retrieve the dead and bring them back to their loved ones.
Though Styx didn`t have a choice, it was a dream come true to her. Charon, her new master, allows her to keep any unlucky soul that falls into her grasp - for eternity.
They may not be willing friends, but Styx doesn`t mind that at all.
