At some point in time, the burning white had inverted into darkness. Someone was screaming, a familiar voice—he was screaming. The floor had slipped out from under his feet and was pressing against his aching back. He could sense his wand on the floor nearby, pulsing faintly as it wound down from the spell. What had he tried to do? As he sat up, blood red swarmed his vision, crowding out the dark and suddenly he was seeing stars. The mirror. His fingers, still new and foreign to him, scrabbled along the floor, brushing over his wand as he searched. His hand met the handle and gingerly, he picked it up. He couldn’t help the moan that escaped from him at unfamiliar set of eyes staring back at him through the mirror. That was it. That was the last thing left to change about himself, and he’d done it. Wasn’t this what he had wanted? Why wasn’t he happy? Why did he still feel so empty?
