Walking along the silent hall, you soon hear trickling water - a sound that eventually encompasses you as you emerge from the dark passage.
You are not alone here.
There are dozens of other people, though it is difficult to see their features as the only light is from the small candles you all possess. Your grip tightens on the one you hold and you tremble, a feeling of anxiety rolling through you.
Maybe this was a bad idea. you think to yourself, shifting and trying to retreat, causing the flame of your candle to flicker precariously. However a large form blocks your path and you flinch, recoiling a little and she tilts her head, the jewels along her tusks chiming lightly.
"My child, recollect yourself." the Zentu rumbles, her voice a purr that vibrates from her form. "You have come here to mourn, why not give yourself that small comfort?"
Hesitantly, you glance down at the candle in your hands, the little plate holding it trembling against your fingers.
"I don't feel like I belong here. These people are mourning for...well, for real things. People they knew. Loved ones they have lost." you say quietly. Speaking feels forbidden here, like you're disturbing the others in the area.
She tilts her large head the other way. "...my child..." she chides softly, "...everyone comes here for a reason. Their grief is not something to be measured or weighed. Some come to weep for tragedies, events they had no part in, no relation in, yet they are affected by it. Others come here to mourn loved ones that have been connected to them for some time, their tears just a reflection of the wounds they bear."
Her trunk gently touches your hands. "No one has any say in what or who you can mourn. That is why this place exists, in honor of all those who have affected us and who deserve to be remembered."
She releases your hand and steps forward, "Find a place here, among the stones and water, that you feel would be suitable for your candle. It is an embodiment of your memories and will forever burn here once placed. I will ensure this."
You glance around - there are thousands of little lights, candles glowing. Some clumped together, others alone, while some are elaborately constructed or placed in odd areas.
"You really mean that? The flame will never go out?" you asked as you look back to her, receiving a soft nod.
"It is in my nature to never forget. And for each of these candles, there is a soul that has passed that will, in time, be forgotten to the outside world. Here, there memory will stay and help soothe the wounds of those who have lost."
The Zentu shifts her weight, passing you and stopping, looking back as you have not moved. Crying can be heard somewhere nearby and you shudder.
Looking at the candle, you watch its flame flicker and flow, dancing silently.
After a moment, you move, following the Zentu further into the room. The darkness lessens the further you venture, the candles offering a warm glow against the water and stone as others walk quietly. Some are knelt in front of candles, others are arranging little displays around them.
You realize the Zentu is no longer beside you and, surprised, you stop walking. She is several paces behind you and she smiles, "Continue onward. Find a home for your candle and give yourself time to mourn. Things may seem dismal now and the pain won't truly fade, but you will learn to live with it. Honor those whom have been lost and never let their names fall from your mind."
"Thank you." you respond softly, turning and pausing before continuing onward.
