The buzzing of the mosquitoes around you keeps turning more and more unbearable as time passes, and the humid heat doesn’t help at all. But with a determined look in your eyes, you keep walking through the jungle, making your way through gigantic plants as tall as you. The birds chirp incessantly on the trees, making you wish that those are the only living beings in this place aside the insects. Well, that and the creature you’re looking for.

Ever since the first time you heard the story, you felt captivated by it. According to the legend, there was an old and wise creature that lived in the heart of the jungle and was revered as a deity by the ancient people that inhabited that land. She was called Nacar due to the colour of her skin, resembling the nacre of the seashells. Every full moon, Nacar would concede a wish to the humans that came to her sanctuary and gave her offerings, ranging from beautiful shells to delicious food or precious and intricate jewels.

Despite the desaparition of the tribes that revered Nacar from ancient times, her legend survived and reached other civilizations, both far in place and time. There had been countless of explorers that entered the jungle in hopes of finding her, or at least a trace of her temple, but those that succeeded were few, and the route to the temple was always kept as a secret by them. After all, what kind of adventure would it be if everyone knew the path? What kind of sacrifice would it be if the traveler didn't struggle along the way and just went there and dropped their gifts to the deity?

Those were your thoughts when suddenly the jungle opened in front of you. The trees and the vegetation gave way to a beautiful river flanked with gorgeous and fragrant flowers. Following the river you reached an ancient temple, with the stones cracking here and there and plants growing all over it. Still, the moss-covered walls were perfectly defined and the spiralling towers rose over the trees in their millenary challenge to the time. You could feel that, somehow, the place wasn’t as uninhabited as it seemed.

As if your thoughts had been read, a soft thumping came from the main door of the temple, and it wasn’t long before a bulky figure appeared through it, making your heart pound with excitement. It was her, the legendary Nacar. She got closer to you with a majestic pace, her trunk and tail moving gracefully as she walked. Her wise and kind eyes examined you for a few seconds, piercing through your soul, though you could swear it took longer, as if time had stopped and you two where frozen for an eternity. And suddenly, you heard it. Her voice, calm and warm, directly speaking into your mind.

“Tell me, mortal. What has brought you here? What is your offering?”
