Basic Information

Name Meaning:

Magnus means 'great'. Chase means 'hunter'. So his full name is 'Great Hunter'.

Age and Birthdate:

16 - forever. Magnus was born January 13th. He also died in battle on his sixteenth birthday. He was immediately taken to Valhalla, where he became one of Odin's immortal warriors known as an 'einherji'.

Parentage:

Son of the human, Natalie Chase, and the Norse god Frey. This makes him a demigod, also known as a 'half-blood'.

Appearance:

Tall, lean, and handsome, with medium-length blond hair, peachy-pale skin, and startling, hauntingly beautiful grey eyes.

Preferred clothing:

Pretty much anything. Doesn't care at all about clothes.

Weapons:

The legendary sword Sumarbrander, aka The Sword of Summer, who once belonged to Frey himself.

Demigod Powers:

Magnus inherited a lot of his abilities from his father, Frey. His dad's the Norse god responsible for all healing, fertility, abundance, warmth, sunshine, rain, beauty, peace, spring, and summer. All good things are said to come from Frey. He's a peaceful god, and his son's personality and abilities reflect this.
Frey is also the god and Lord of the Elves, which he presides over in their world, Alfheim - "the home of the elves". Because of this, the type of magic Magnus uses is known as 'alf seidr', or 'elf magic'.

Healing:

Magnus is a natural-born healer. Using his hands, he can heal a person's wounds, without any incantations or aids, and make their injuries close and mend within seconds.

Light Magic:

He emits a warm, golden light whenever he uses his abilities. This light acts as a bane to all dark creatures, like wolves, ghosts, and trolls. His glow is not very noticeable during the day, but at night it's very obvious. He can also summon and manipulate sunlight when he needs to. His friends like to use him as a flashlight.

Peaceful Presence:

This demigod radiates a sense of peace, and he smells pretty good, too - like jasmine and roses on a warm summer's night.

Empathy:

Magnus can can occasionally get a glimpse of someone's past when he heals them. He also experiences their emotions as if they were his own, which freaks some people out. It's not something he can control, and he does his best to explain that to people before he heals them. He feels badly he can't control or predict when such a connection will occur.

Nature Magic:

Magnus has a fairly decent green thumb. He can make plants grow, bend, or move to his will.

Changing Seasons:

He can make a large area change seasons to either spring or summer, although the effort exhausts him.

Healing the Mind:

Most humans can't grasp the concept of the godly realm, and they're not able to see the supernatural, either. If they're trying to learn about these things, Magnus can make sure they don't go insane by easing their mental strife and allowing their minds to calmly, gently accept these concepts and realities.

The Peace of Frey:

Magnus can consecrate a rather large area of land and bless it so that no fighting can take place there. It is very tiring on his body, however.

Disarming:

Since he's a nonviolent type of person, one of the last things Magnus wants to do is fight. An easy way to take care of his enemies is by disarming all of them. Magnus can concentrate and expel some peaceful energy, which forces all of his opponent's weapons to leap from their hands and sail off into the distance. He considers this his 'finishing move'.

Unsinkable:

Any boat or sailing vessel that Magnus is on cannot capsize, since he carries a natural blessing for being the grandson of the god of the ocean.

Intelligence:

Before his death and subsequent arrival in Valhalla, Magnus was Harvard-bound. He continues to enjoy learning as much as he can in his spare time between battle practices.

Other Languages:

Magnus is fluent in American Sign Language. One of his best friends, an elf named Hearthstone, is deaf. He taught Magnus ASL so they could talk.

Partial Immunity:

His father protects the human world from both the Fire Giants and the Ice Giants. Because of this, Magnus is partially immune to both of these elements. Similarly, he has an extended tolerance of extreme temperatures.

Einherji Abilties

Immortality:

Magnus is one of Odin's holy warriors, which are known as the einherjar. All einherji live in Odin's sacred hall, Valhalla, which is situated in the royal city of the gods, Asgard. He is immortal, and never ages - which is good, considering most of Valhalla's social activities are 'to the death'. Yes, that even includes the classes in Bikram Yoga, and every Thursday night's bowling competitions, too. Fun times.

Strength and Agility:

Being an einherji comes with some pretty cool perks. Like all the other Valhalla residents, he's very strong - capable of picking up cars and boulders with ease, and he can leap three stories upwards in a single bound without any problems.Regeneration:

All einherji's wounds heal at an advanced, accelerated rate. But Magnus, in particular, heals even faster than the others, thanks to his natural healing abilities.

Weapons:

Magnus weilds/instructs the magical sword, Sumarbrander. Because who doesn't want a talking, floating sword that can fight on it's own? Just don't ask Magnus what he thinks about his sword's personality. He has some things to say about that.

Personality

Magnus is smart, sassy, and sweet. He's very kind, warm, and generous to the people he loves. He prefers to listen rather than talk, and values intimate conversations with one person at a time over group activities. A true introvert, Magnus needs a lot of alone-time to recharge after being social. He, in fact, prefers to spend his time alone, and openly admits that he doesn't have much of a social life. He loves very deeply, and would give his life to protect a friend. He never holds grudges, and he abhors violence. He also will not tolerate bigotry or discrimination on any level.
He also harbors a deep-seated mistrust of the wealthy firmly inside his heart. Magnus was homeless for several years, and learned very quickly that humans were selfish, and apt to ignore him, instead of helping him out. He watched people spend five hundred dollars on a silk handscarf, use it once, then throw it away. These same people would refuse to give him five dollars for pizza. Those years on the streets, begging for food, made him wary and mistrustful of those with wealth.

Delving Deeper

Magnus grew up in a cozy apartment above a Korean barbecue restaurant in downtown Boston, Massachusetts with his mom. Natalie Chase loved her son very much, and did her very best to teach Magnus all the things he'd need to know in order to survive on his own, in case something happened to her. He grew up hiking and camping with his mom every weekend when he was a child, learning how to fish, pitch tents, and how to navigate by the stars. He was, unfortunately, very physically weak, with a delicate constitution. He also had asthma, and was allergic to a lot of common allergens, like dust and pollen. Add in his love for comics, video games, and other 'nerdy things', and Magnus was considered a prime target for his school's bullies, and he was picked on extensively with no real way to defend himself. He used his wits and his sarcasm to survive the battleground commonly known as public high school.

His mother Natalie did a great job at raising such a sweet son all by herself, but she never told Magnus that he was actually a demigod, and that his father was the Norse god Frey. His parents had met at a duck pond during the summer many years ago, had a romantic fling, and then amicably parted ways. That's all he knew about his dad growing up. Natalie never made a big deal about his father not being in their lives, so Magnus didn't dwell on his absence. He was happy and content to just be with his mom.

Unfortunately, Natalie was murdered in front of Magnus when he was fourteen years old by two glowing, blue wolves, who'd been sent by the god Loki to kill them both. Natalie Chase sacrificed herself to save her son, ushering him out their balcony window and down the fire escape before he could be killed. A few seconds afterwards, and the wolves struck, ending Natalie Chase's life. Magnus was homeless after that, surviving on the streets of Boston by using his wits and the skills his mother had taught him during their summers together. It wasn't until his sixteenth birthday, when he went to investigate his Uncle Randolph's home for information surrounding his mother's demise, that he learned what had truly happened that fateful night. Randolp revealed the truth about Magnus's parentage, leading him to the Longfellow Bridge, where he told Magnus he could claim his 'true inheritance', the legendary sword Sumarbrander, which had been lost to the worlds for over a thousand years. Of course, as soon as he actually summoned the magical broadsword from the icy depths of the river, the Fire Giant Surt appeared. He demanded that Magnus give him the godly weapon so he could start Ragnarok, the war that would destroy all of humanity, and all of the nine worlds. Magnus refused to give Surt the sword, and was promptly killed in battle.

But Odin, in his wisdom, thought that the young demigod had fought heroically, and deserved a better afterlife that what would await him in Helheim. And so, he instructed a valkyrie named Samirah Al-Abbas to bring him to Valhalla, where Magnus would be one of his special holy warriors destined to fight for the fate of the nine worlds. And that's how Magnus's adventures and quests began.

The blond healer quickly found himself on a mission to thwart the trickster god Loki's plans on starting Ragnarok by unleashing the Fenris Wolf. And once that disaster was over, he found himself roped in on a quest to find Thor's missing hammer, which the thunder god needed to protect humankind from the giants who sought to kill them all.

The hammer has now been found and returned to Thor...and Loki has been freed from his bonds. Which isn't good, since according to the prophecy, that means that Ragnarok is probably on it's way. How can Magnus and his friends find - and then stop - a god from starting the war that will end all the worlds? And how do they do that without dying - again?

It's a good thing his cousin, Annabeth Chase, has some tips on saving the world, because Magnus and his friends have one impossible quest ahead of them - and all nine worlds are depending on them to save the day.
