Crack Shot

She'd managed to track her target through the swamp for nearly half a mile undetected. The giant mink that served as her stalwart companion and mount shifted ever so slightly out of boredom and she patted him gently. "Now, now, Bitey. We're almost done. After we make this shot, we'll have Shanky carve it up and take it home." The mink made a small noise of understanding. Stabitha raised her bow, readying her shot. The young elk, still much larger than herself or even the mink she rode, seemed to not take notice. She fired the arrow, finding purchase in the elk's sinewy neck. The animal staggered, bellowing loudly. Stabitha dug her heels into Bitey's sides, signalling the beast to move forward for the attack. The ensuing fight was over quickly enough, with Stabitha switching to her seldom-used dagger, and Bitey... well, biting. The kobold ranger and her partner would soon be joined by Stabitha's older brother Shanktholomew - better known as Shanky.

"This was not an honorable death. You should have aimed for the head. Would have been faster, a cleaner kill." As Shanky carved up the elk, Stabitha rolled her eyes.

"Yeah, yeah. I know. So sorry, big brother. I promise to do better next time." Shanky clucked his tongue, clearly not believing his petulant little sister. The kobold samurai continued his work in relative silence as the ranger fed small pieces of the kill to Bitey.

The pair hatched from the same clutch of eggs, within minutes of each other. So whilst everyone in the kobold clan considered one another 'brother' and 'sister', Shanky and Stabitha truly were brother and sister. They were educated together, and while they pursued different paths in their service to the green dragon known as the Emerald Queen, they remained incredibly close. The two were fantastic foils for each other - Shanky was less impulsive than Stabitha, and Stabitha was, surprisingly, more approachable... unless you happened to be a gnome, anyway. While it could be said that the majority of kobolds hate gnomes due to some ancient slight between gods, Stabitha took this hatred to another level entirely - murder. The moment she caught sight of a gnome, or if Bitey signalled that he could smell one, the chase was on, and that gnome would soon be no more.

Shanky finished carving up the young elk. "There was a great deal of good meat. Should provide a nice feast for the clan, and perhaps the Queen might like the skull. We'll load Bitey up and head on back." Stabitha nodded, keeping an arrow readied just in case something came to scavenge on the elk's remains before they could make their exit. "Will you be joining us, dear brother?"

Shanky nodded as he loaded meat into packs on Bitey's saddle. "Someone has to keep an eye on you. Make sure you don't start shit with the Humans in the swamp again." Stabitha rolled her eyes, and mounted her mink again.

"Well, if I hadn't done it, they might have wandered into the Queen's lair. Then we would have had to sound the alarm. And you know how much the Emerald Queen hates having her sleep disturbed." Shanky cocked his head slightly as if he hadn't thought of it that way.

When the trio made it back to the clan, one of the elders greeted them. "You're being summoned by the Queen Herself. Some sort of special mission, I'm guessing. You two, and three others."

Stabitha and her brother exchanged glances, excitement dancing in their eyes as they followed the Queen's guard to her lair. The Emerald Queen nearly filled the cavern deep below the swamp, piles of gold and silver coins and countless jewels surrounding her. Her voice seemingly purred as she addressed the motley group of kobolds that stood before her. Their mission was to stake out the nearby goblin encampment that had seemingly sprung up overnight - why were they here, why had they not bothered to send tribute to Her Highness? Stabitha cleared her throat, hoping she wasn't going to be punished for interrupting.

"And what do we do with them after, My Queen? Surely a belated tribute would be in just as poor taste as no tribute at all?"

The dragon smiled slightly. "Then you are to kill them. As you say, a belated tribute is still an insult. Lay waste to their camp, and you all will be given quite the reward when you return victorious. Go, now. You will be outfitted by the guards for your trip." The five kobolds bowed their heads, and set forth.

Stabitha and her brother Shanky started off as a pair of joke characters that my husband and I came up with. The idea would be that his kobold, Shanky, would refuse to speak anything other than Draconic, and my Stabitha would 'translate' for him (something not unlike Toshi and Akiko from 'American Dad'). This part of the concept got thrown out when the group decided to run an all-kobold party, but we still had a lot of fun with these characters in D&D 5e. Stabitha quickly gained a (mostly-undeserved) reputation as a murderhobo - I played to my faults and murdered a deep gnome in cold blood... I may have also drawn "first blood" against the goblin camp.
