Life Excerpt
The music was loud. Just as it should be in a club. He was surveying the dance floor and the bar below from his bird’s-eye view up in the VIP area. Anyone looking at him wouldn’t be able to tell because of his near-constant poker face, but deep down he was proud of what he saw. This was his club. And it was one of the hottest clubs in the city. Every night it was filled to the brim with people. There was something else stirring at the back of his mind as well. A voice that he had to force himself to ignore every day. It wanted him to focus on how much blood was all around him, ready for him to drink. Unlike other vampires in this city Drake chose to not indulge that voice. That part of himself. He did drink blood, but only as often as was absolutely necessary for him to keep his looks and his strength. And never directly from a living being. He was well aware that there were people that were willing to let his kind drink from them but he’d never felt comfortable letting anyone know what he was.
As he kept scanning the scene below his eyes suddenly stopped on a person at the bar. What initially caught his attention was the long, bright red hair. Then he saw the cute face of the guy the hair belonged to. Drake smiled. He recognized him at once. This young man had been in the club every single night for weeks. Drake turned his head a bit to the side and called out to his assistant who was always close at hand:
“Alex!” Someone stepped up to his side.
“Yes, Drake?”
“Do you see the redhead at the bar?” He could see Alex looking at everyone at the bar.
“Um, the long-haired one?”
“Yes. I want you to invite him up here for me.”
“Okay. And if he asks me why?”
“Then tell him that it’s for being such a loyal patron of the club.” Alex nodded and headed down the stairs. Drake’s eyes followed him as he approached the young redhead. He smiled as he saw the surprise on the young man’s face. And then their eyes met, and a shy smile spread on the young man’s face.
Moments later he was up on the VIP mezzanine, looking around with a slightly bewildered look. He spun around in a split second as Drake approached him from behind and cleared his throat. Drake looked at him with a slightly concerned look on his face.
“I’m sorry. Didn’t mean to scare you.” As he realized who it was that he was standing in front of the young man’s cheeks grew a bit redder. “Are you okay?”
“Oh, yes! Peachy. I’ve never been up here before, is all.” Drake smiled at him and winked.
“I’m aware.” Now he sported a sheepish smile.
“Hehe, of course you are.”
“Well, let’s make this more official. I’m Drake Wainebright.” As he shook the hand of the redhead a shy smile spread on the young man’s face again.
“Oh, I know that.”
“You do, do you?” Drake gave him a smug smile. “I’m afraid you have me at a disadvantage though. You know my name, but I don’t know your name.”
“Right. My name’s Simon. Simon Henley.”
“It’s a pleasure to meet you, Simon Henley. Always a pleasure to meet such a loyal patron. Especially when they’re as lovely as you. Tell you what. Why don’t we sit down in my private booth.” Simon’s eyes grew wide. “I um...I’d love to get to know you some more is all.”
“I’d like that. Very much.” Drake smiled at Simon before leading the way to his private booth.
They spent the next few hours talking about anything and everything. Drake had never felt this comfortable around another person before. And as days went by Simon came back every night and they enjoyed each other’s company every time.
Three weeks after they met that first night Simon stayed all the way until closing time. Which wasn’t unusual at all lately. Drake was feeling a bit uneasy though at this point because the last few days Simon had been a bit flirty towards him. It wasn’t like Drake didn’t fancy Simon as well, but the fact that he was a vampire made him not feel comfortable starting relationships with anyone. They were in his office and Drake was locking his safe after putting away the earnings of the night. Simon was waiting a few feet behind him, waiting for him to be done.
“Time for you to go home then.”
“What if I don’t want to be alone tonight?” Drake closed his eyes and took a deep breath before turning around facing Simon.
“This is not a good idea.”
“What do you mean?”
“This.” Drake moved his hand indicating that he meant anything between the two of them. “Anyone being with me is a bad idea.” Simon moved closer until he was standing right in front of him.
“I don’t believe that for a second.” He put a hand on Drake’s arm. “I think you know that I like you a lot.” Moving swiftly, Drake grabbed Simon by his arms, spun them both around and pushed Simon up against the wall. For a fleeting second there was a scared look on Simon’s face but it seemed to disappear as quickly as it had appeared.
“You don’t get it. I’m dangerous! I’m a danger to you, to anyone around me!”
“Why? Why do you think that?” Drake hung his head with his eyes closed. Thoughts were sprinting through his mind at what felt like a hundred miles an hour. He could only think of a single way to convince Simon of how dangerous he was. But he was afraid that he’d lose a friend in the process. But there was no other way to get away from any follow-up questions. He made his fangs come out before lifting his head up and facing Simon again.
“I’m a vampire. I’m a monster!” There it was again. The momentary scared look on Simon’s face. This time it was blended with surprise though.
“Are you saying that you...want to...drink from me?” Now it was Drake’s turn to be surprised. Had he...had he just heard a hint of flirtation on Simon’s voice? Before he could come up with an answer to his own question Simon had reached up with his hand and was now caressing his cheek. “You...you don’t need to drain me, right?”
“Um...no. No, I don’t.”
“And, how often do you need to...drink?”
“Not very often. Like, once every two weeks or so. Otherwise I lose my strength and my young looks.” Simon smiled.
“And we definitely don’t want that to happen.” He leaned in closer before kissing Drake. And Drake couldn’t help but to kiss him back. When their lips parted Simon whispered. “I want to give you my heart, my blood and...my...body...”
