Life Excerpt

He swore under his breath as he ran through the woods. The scream he had just heard had resonated with his entire body and soul. He knew what that meant. It had emanated from his ward. Shayde had spent what felt like ages searching for the one he was meant to guard. And when he finally came to the right planet it seemed that he might be too late. He had no idea what was being done to this ward of his but judging by the scream it was nothing pleasant. He was a Jie and they were a race of guardians. Most of his people had a ward for the entirety of the ward's lifespan. Protecting them from harm. He could feel the annoyance rising. He would be the laughing stock of an entire race if he lost this one before even being able to be their guardian at all. Ten years. That was how long he had been traveling from planet to planet looking for this elusive ward of his. He had an innate sense of where they were, but it did not tell him exactly which planet to find them on. Only in which direction they were from him, and whether they were near or far. He could feel the soul link growing stronger, indicating that his ward was getting really close now.
There was a clearing up ahead and through the trees he could see the light from a fire. He slowed down and snuck up to the edge of the clearing to scope out the situation. Staying behind a tree he could hear men laughing and someone who was in pain. And thanks to the link he shared with his ward he could sense the distress and fear. Shayde leaned to the side and peeked at the scene in the open area.
There was three people present. Two burly men dressed like highwaymen, and...something else. From where he was standing he couldn't really make out much of what the third person looked like. It wasn't human like the other two, that much he was certain of. What was also certainty was that that creature was the one he'd been searching for. A look of horror spread over Shayde's face as he realized what the men were about to do. One of them was on his knees, with his back towards Shayde, pulling his ward closer by his thighs to get it closer to the bandit's groin area. Anger and disgust flashed through him as Shayde burst into the clearing and attacked the kneeling man. His sharp metal claws ripped through cloth and skin with ease as Shayde slashed him across the back before grabbing his head with both hands and quickly twisting until the head was at an unnatural angle. He then turned to the second man, who was now brandishing a short sword, looking both angry and horrified by what he'd just seen happen to his friend. Shayde looked at him with a wicked grin.
-"Do you really think you've got a shot?" The man spit in front of him in a manner that Shayde supposed was intended to offend him. It didn't. It just looked like a silly thing to do.
-"Ha, you don't look impressive at all." Shayde nodded towards the limp body of the other bandit.
-"I think your friend might disagree. If he wasn't dead, of course." He chuckled.
-"You caught ‘im by surprise, is all. You don't have that luxury with me. And I'm armed."
-"True. But what exactly are you going to do with that over-sized butter knife of yours that's gonna make even a dent on someone that's immortal?" The guy looked surprised and taken aback by that. For a second. Then he regained his composure.
-"Yer lyin'. Yer just sayin' that ‘cause you think I'll give up an' run away." Shayde shrugged.
-"Can't blame a guy for trying, can you?" He sighed. "Guess I was hoping you'd be smarter than this. But, oh well."

A few minutes later Shayde was cleaning the blood off of his claws on the guys clothes. When he was done he got up from his crouching position and walked over to his ward. He could see that the men had stabbed him in the back several times. Probably to incapacitate him. Which had worked as intended. He got down on his knees and placed his hands over the wounded area. His hands glowed and then the young one gasped. Pretty green, but frightened, eyes looked at Shayde as he sat back and breathed more heavily than before.
-"Did...did you just...heal me?" It was such a tiny little voice that Shayde couldn't help but smile.
-"Yeah, I did. Or...well...it's more like I transferred some of my life essence to you, which then healed you." He smiled as the little satyr-like person in front of him gave him a quizzical look. Then his eyes grew wider.
-"You mean you hurt yourself to help me?" Shayde shook his head, smiling.
-"No no, I'm fine. It's just that I've never done it before and apparently it wasn't as easy as I thought it would be." He gave the little one a warm smile. "Where are my manners? Shayde Diabolos, at your service." He made as much of a bow as he could in his seated state. And once again those green eyes were wide. This time he could sense the fear returning as well though.
-"Are...are you a...a..." Shayde tilted his head a little.
-"A what?"
-"...demon?" The word was said in such a low whisper that he barely heard it. But heard it he did.
-"Why would you...Oh! Oh. You mean because of my name?" The little one gave the tiniest of nods in response. Shayde smiled. "I know it sounds ominous, but I assure you, it has nothing to do with demons or hell. My name simply means shadow magic. The Diabolos in my name means magic." His ward looked visibly relieved. "Anyway. What's your name?"
-"Aias." Shayde nodded.
-"So. My ward's name is Aias, huh?"
-"Ward?" Shayde chuckled.
-"Right. I knew I was forgetting something. I'm your guardian."
