Six months ago, he'd woken up in the hospital with no recollection of how he'd come to be there---or, for a time, even his own name. He had vague memories of being very cold, wanting nothing more than to sleep---and then being very warm, and glad he was alive. Then nothing for some time, until he woke lying in a bed with a huge white cat curled up beside him.

The cat was Iraya, who had found him in a blizzard late in winter. Iraya, who sheltered him from the blowing snow and icy wind, who later refused to leave his side, snarling and snapping at anyone who approached. Doctors discussed a tranquilizer for what they described as "a dangerous animal" until Jikarta used his considerable influence to convince them that Iraya was better than any thermal blanket to treat Isatsu's hypothermia. He didn't have frostbite, all he needed was to get warm again, and time for his concussion to heal. So Iraya was deemed a "service animal" and allowed to stay.

Eventually he did remember his given name, and while he recovered, Jikarta used his various connections to search for Isatsu's family, or at the very least his identity, but no one even fitting his description had been reported missing in the last year. Checking family records for the last sixteen years likewise yielded nothing. "You are a mystery," Jikarta told him.

*****
"We hadn't had any significant snowfall all season, but there was a blizzard that night. Iraya ran out into the snow---and left the door open---and no one knew where he'd gone until the next morning. The maids were so mad that there was melting snow all over the foyer, Nuk was mad that anyone could have walked in. But by that time, the snow covered his tracks completely. That's how hard it was snowing. It's really miraculous you survived at all. When the plows came through, Iraya trotted out to the road and led the work crews to where you were buried.”
