breakfast for one

Oats had lost someone, but he didn't know who. He was often told about them, and loved to hear the stories. However, the moment the teller of the story was finished, he would forget everything they had said. It was like a black hole in his memory.

He wished he could remember a name, a laugh, or anything! But there was nothing there.

The only thing that he had was breakfast. He remembered eating breakfast together every morning. And so, without fail, every morning he cooked elaborate, delicious breakfasts. He would set the table for two, and serve two portions. He would then eat, and each day a warm, happy feeling would come over him. He knew this had to do with the one he had lost.

Then breakfast would end, and while the feeling would linger for a time, eventually it would dissipate. Loneliness would then take over once again.
