And the end of all our exploring
Will be to arrive where we started
And know the place for the first time.
T. S. Eliot, Little Gidding
“Romina, the sun is rising", Ondjaki told the princess. She raised from her usual place reading for the village little archans and, smiling at him with her strongly reassuring smile, straightened her turban. “I’ll be at the thorp gate in one hour.", he said, "you meet me there.”.
“Gate” was a figure of speech, since there was no wall nor gate around the Oasis. A free city can’t have a gate, that’s known.
Only Savannah didn’t look free anymore, Ondjaki thought.
That was the day of the council of thirteen princess, the day Ondjaki has been waiting for since he started his training to become Savannah’s patron.
The sun was already in the sky when Ondjaki met Romina and both of them walked through the village as if it was their very first time. Ondjaki felt at home at that place since his first memories. And he remember Savannah just as it is now: the most beautiful and wealthy place of the known world.
The tends of the Market were being arranged, wild herbs, typical fruits and most valuable enchanted spices, elixirs, potions and jewellery were seen everywhere. As Ondjaki passed, the citizen on market made silence in a reverence gesture.
In Savannah, enchanted items were used in sacred rituals in the name of the gods. Life in the Oasis was settled around those rituals and other celebrations, the most full of beauty, joy and life there were.
Unfortunately, the outsiders did recognize wealth though they didn’t recognize beauty.
As the village became notorious, people from the known world invaded Savanah in order to make fortunes, bringing the thorp fear and corruption. Children and women were enslaved, houses were looted, the potions started to be used for vanity, the rituals were forgotten.
On that day, by the time sun disappeared from the horizon, the council had already met and deliberated. All citizens were at the temple forecourt, twelve princess were waiting for Romina next to the altar. She laid her hand on Ondjaki’s back, and with head up both entered the temple.
Neelas started singing a repetitive melody followed by drum beats, that became louder and louder. Ondjaki stepped in the altar, and the temple was on fire.
From that day on, the Oasis was a free city. After Ondjaki's sacrifice, a spell vanished Savannah from all maps and memories of all the non-residents. No outsider would never be able to visit the village or know anything about it.
As the prophecy says, only after Romina’s death the story of Savannah would be discovered, but at that time the place would no longer exist.
And then story goes about the golden days of the Oasis. Savanah’s people became free and the ancestral wisdom was resignified. And with freedom came peace.
Oasis magic had only grown during this time, which made the place a lost paradise. Now that this story is very well known, no one can say what has really happened to the place.
Nonetheless, it's believed Savannah still exists, though it can only be found by people with free souls.
