Poor King Roland. He just wanted his family back. But, as the old adage goes: "Be careful what you wish for..."
It all started with the death of his beloved wife Queen Meredith. She had always been a fragile woman but her chronic health problems finally caught up with her shortly after the birth of their only child, Annabella. Roland was in mourning for over a month, refusing to leave his room or speak to anyone. The only thing that pulled him from his room was the sound of Annabella's wails coming from her nursery. Her nanny was shushing and singing but nothing quieted the tiny princess.
Unable to tolerate his daughter's cries any longer he forced himself from his bed and trudged across the hall to her room and opened the door. The nanny apologized profusely but Roland said nothing and simply took the child from her and held her to his chest. Immediately, Annabella stopped crying and fell soundly asleep.
"Aww! She just wanted her daddy!" the nanny gushed.
Roland choked back ears. He had been so focused on his wife's death that he had all but forgotten the new life that needed him. He then made a solemn vow to never take anything for granted ever again. Whether it was reading her a story before bed, having a tea party with her, or simply walking with her in the royal gardens, he always set aside time to be with the little princess. Even when she grew into her teenage years they still remained close.
But this all would soon change.
It all started with a cough. Just a small one, so easy to dismiss. Surely it was just a tickle in her throat. But things would only get worse. One morning, Annabella and the king were having breakfast when she went to take a sip of her tea only to let out a horrible hacking cough that startled everyone. She insisted that her tea had simply gone down the wrong pipe though the king and servants were certain the cup had yet to touch her lips.
Over the coming days, Anabella's coughs turned into horrible wheezing. She became pale and weak, unable to leave her bed. When the royal doctors couldn't help, King Roland summoned healers from across the land and beyond but no one was able to help the sick princess. Only a month after that first little cough, she was dead.
