So she didn't fly. She built a nest on the ground where she felt safe. She got from place to place with a strange hopping walk. It was, admittedly, a very awkward situation for a bird.
When get siblings would suggest she go flying with them, she would always make an excuse not to. They started to grow suspicious, and like good brothers and sisters, they teased her mercilessly about it. They would tell her that if she just tried, just took that first jump, she’d be fine.
And then one of her brother's tricked her. Telling her he had a surprise, he’d blindfolded her and grabbed her. He’d taken off and deposited her on a high tree branch. As she struggled out of the blindfold, he took off laughing. He told her she just had to jump, just this once and he’d never bother her again.
Paola looked down at the ground. It was a million miles away and it had also started to churn underneath her. She closed her eyes and used her wing to steady herself on the branch.
She took a deep breath and opened her eyes again. The ground was still spinning but this time she kept her eyes open. Then the dizziness kicked in. She slipped and tumbled towards the ground.
Her fear paralyzed her and she couldn't move her wings to slow the fall. She had somehow flipped upside down and was staring at the vast expanse of sky around her. It was more beautiful than she remembered. She focused. Suddenly, as she was about to hit the ground her trance broke and she spread her wings.
She landed, not gracefully and with a bigger thump than she’d like to admit. She thought about what just happened. She realized she was no longer scared of the sky. She had just fallen out if it, her biggest fear. And she’d survived.
Looking around surreptitiously, she tentatively flapped her wings. A small hop, and she was in the air. She took a deep breath, and flew upwards.
