She could always see spirits. Could talk to them. Tried to help them in her little girl way. Her parents thought it was a stage. They thought she just had a vividly creative mind and imaginary friends. It wasn't until just after her eleventh birthday, when she was becoming more articulate by the day that they began to think there might be a problem with her. They were well-meaning, only wanting to help their youngest child, but all the myriad of visits to psychologists and other doctors did was teach the girl to hide what she could do and pretend to be normal.

The years went by with Mala diligently hiding her gift. It was stressful, especially when she had to ignore someone recently deceased who was only asking her for help so they could cross over. One night at dinner, after an especially trying day at school, she slipped and yelled out at the dinner table.

"Shut up! Just stop! I can't help you! Just go into the damn light or something and leave me alone!" She slammed her hands on the table and then looked up at the silent room, her parents' wide eyes and her brothers' snickering laughs. She knew she was in trouble.

Fed up with the daughter they, in their minds, termed 'crazy, delusional, nuts', they decided it would be best if she lived somewhere else for a while. A call that night to her father's sister decided her fate. Mala was on a plane the next day, all her worldly possessions in two suitcases, on the way across the country to live with her aunt - a woman she had never met. She was shivering as she stepped into the terminal, through no fault of the temperature. A woman with long, braided grey hair was holding a sign with her name. She had a warm smile and even though Mala had never met her, she knew this was her aunt and she felt immediately at ease.

Where her parents and brothers had been very prim and proper, church-going, well-to-do with good jobs, her aunt was a free spirit, preferring nature to a church, and she was an artist. What's more, is that the woman believed her niece. Instead of shoving her off to doctors and scoffing at her, calling her names, she helped Mala to learn about her gift. They did research at the local library and online. They found out that not only could she speak to those who had passed, but she could also sense the future, see auras, sense moods...she wasn't crazy, she was psychic. And slowly but surely, Mala began to develop the skill with her gifts that she needed to help, to be who she was meant to be.
