Nevina cautiously approached the sea witch.

The angel kanis had come with her owner in order to receive a blessing from the famous Merana. A blessing was something Nevina and her owner certainly needed right about now.

Ever since Nevina could remember, the angel kanis had lived a pampered life under the care of her wealthy socialite owner. But several months prior, Nevina's owner, Marie, had fallen into hard times financially due to unwise investments. This change in fortunes resulted in Marie having to sell her mansion and other upscale possessions. Since then, Marie had been racking her brain to find a way to make income. When Marie heard about Merana and her ability to bless pets, the woman became very excited. Perhaps the sea witch could give Nevina a special talent that could be used to earn money!

With a smile, Merana acknowledged Nevina and Marie and told them in order for Nevina to be blessed they needed to bring a few items to her. Thankfully, the items in question weren’t expensive, and soon Nevina’s owner proudly presented Merana with the requested items. In return, Merana created a magical potion and fed the potion to Nevina.

As soon as she finished ingesting the potion, the angel kanis felt some weird sensations in her body. Nevina looked down at her paws and in shock saw her white fur darken into a brown hue. Soon blue markings began to cover the kanis’ body, and horns began to emerge from her head. Marie let out a huge scream as she saw the transformation her beloved pet was undergoing. This was not what she had wanted!

Soon the transformation was complete. Nevina now looked like a creature that had been mutated by a radioactive substance. The kanis was now a hydrus pet! Marie was furious and demanded answers from Merana, asking the sea witch if Nevina’s new look was actually a blessing. The sea witch gave a small smile and told Marie that her blessing was giving Nevina a magical connection to the sea and that with time the kanis would eventually accept her appearance. A deeply perturbed Marie left the sea witch in a huff with an ashamed Nevina walking behind her.

Much to Marie and Nevina’s dismay, Merana’s power had apparently not given Nevina any extraordinary talents. All that had come of their efforts was a totally unwanted makeover for the kanis. This setback devastated Marie, for she had been planning to enter Nevina in various pet beauty pageants in order to raise some quick sP and keep their social status in good standing. But now Nevina obviously wasn’t the pinnacle of beauty. The obvious solution would have been to buy an angelic potion to restore Nevina’s beauty, but alas, Marie’s finances did not allow such a thing.

Nevina, on her part, was more concerned about the future than ever. Marie had always taken pride in the fact that her pet had the rarest and most beautiful color in Subeta, the angelic color. The kanis knew that being an angel pet had given Marie hope that she would become a respected face in high society again; both pet and owner had seen Subetans in awe whenever an angel pet was present beside its owner. In contrast, Marie held a disdain for other pet colors such as graveyard, darkmatter, and bloodred; she believed such colors were beneath her as a dazzling socialite.

Sadly, Marie made the choice to give Nevina to a Subetan who had been looking for a hydrus kanis. Nevina’s new owner had five other pets. Two were darkmatter, one was graveyard, and the final pets were hydrus like Nevina. Nevina was in tears when Marie gave her away, and the kanis continued to struggle over the next few months. She had been Marie’s only pet, and now had to share her new owner’s attention with her new siblings.

Nevina often clashed with her darkmatter fester sibling, who was a prankster and a metalhead. Nevina often cringed whenever she heard her fester sibling loudly wailing along to the metal soundtracks that the fester would play in her room. Nevina also was uncertain about her graveyard mallarchy sibling. The mallarchy spent her time training and battling opponents in the Battle Coliseum. Leah, Nevina’s new owner, often said that she loved watching opponents getting owned by her graveyard mallarchy. Most of them tended to underestimate her battle pet because of his appearance and wrongly assumed he had limited mobility and strength. Nevina, however, had never seen a graveyard mallarchy until Leah adopted her, and felt a little uncomfortable any time she looked at the mallarchy.

Nevina got along with her hydrus siblings, a wyllop and devonti, rather well for the most part. The one major exception was tastes in cuisine. The hydrus devonti had a fondness for eating the items sold at Half Baked, which Nevina found disgusting. The kanis’s disgust came from Marie, who had turned her nose up at the wares offered by Half Baked and had spoken disdainfully about pets who chose to eat such dishes. The disagreement came to a head when one day the hydrus devonti proudly announced that she was applying to be a taste tester for Half Baked. Nevina spoke so harshly about her hydrus sibling’s choice that the hydrus devonti left the room in tears and the other darkmatter pet in the family, a swampie, scolded Nevina. The darkmatter swampie soon told Leah of the incident.

Leah punished Nevina by making the hydrus kanis an assistant to Quentin, the quest giver of Shadowglen. Every weekend Nevina would run graveyard errands for Quentin. Leah hoped that the job would make the kanis less spoiled. At her job, Nevina once again experienced culture shock; Marie had felt Shadowglen was way too creepy and dangerous for her pampered angel. The only time Nevina had been in Shadowglen was when she and Marie were forced to stay there for a couple of days due to a cruise they were taking being forced to land there for supplies and safety checks. During that time, Marie kept Nevina in the inn they lodged at in order to supposedly protect the kanis from the locals and ghosts. During their stay, Nevina had seen some of what Shadowglen offered in the form of zombie Subetans. Their appearance unnerved Marie and she kept Nevina away from them as much as she could.

Yet now, Nevina had a lot more exposure to Shadowglen as she went about completing Quentin’s errands. She saw the bizarre items offered by not only Half-Baked but also the Zombie Den and the Underground. She met the wrestlers of the Underground Wrestling arena face to face, watching them train for their matches and hearing them talk about the newest converts to zombie life that came to ShadowGlen every Survival. Nevina found Quentin to be a very kind person. They taught Nevina about the local wildlife and fauna, advising her on which flowers and creatures required careful handling in order to not suffer any ill effects.

One weekend Quentin sent Nevina to the mage to get some items from him, only for Nevina to arrive at the Mage’s home and find a note on the door stating that the Mage had gone to the Sacred Lands. Quentin gave Nevina permission to go to the Sacred Lands to retrieve the items. At the Sacred Lands, Nevina asked around until she learned that the Mage was staying at the Wizard’s place. Nevina managed to find the Wizard’s locale and get the requested items from the Mage, but on the way back to Shadowglen the kanis ran into trouble. Nevina was ambushed by two spectrum keeto bandits looking to pilfer magical items. Nevina attempted to fight back, but the keetos overpowered her and stole the items. Nevina chased the thieves for a couple miles until they all came upon the ocean. The spectrum keetos floated up into the air, making a rainbow trail as they did so. Nevina, determined, to get the items back, dived into the water and continued to give chase.

Nevina hadn’t learned to swim until she received the tutelage of her hydrus wyllop sibling. The wyllop often dove underwater to find inspiration for her paintings. Now one thing that the hydrus wyllop had cautioned Nevina about was swimming in strong currents. Sometimes it was difficult to tell when a body of water had a strong current, but typically there were signs a good swimmer used to determine if they were headed towards danger. Unfortunately, Nevina had placed so much attention on making sure the keeto thieves didn’t get away that she didn’t notice the signs that she was swimming into a strong current. Eventually the hydrus kanis got caught in a strong ocean current that managed to force her underwater and away from the thieves. Nevina spent the next several minutes trying to get out of the current to no avail. She barely managed to keep her head above water and lost consciousness.

When Nevina opened her eyes she found herself on a mysterious tropical island. A blacklight yaherra greeted Nevina, stating that he had rescued her from drowning. The yaherra took Nevina to a tribal council of 10 pets. The council asked Nevina to tell her life story, and the hydrus kanis did so. After a few hours of deliberation, the council sent word for Nevina to meet them at a lake hidden deep in the local jungle. When Nevina arrived there, she was told to dive into the lake by the council members. Upon complying to the request, Nevina once again went under a transformation. When she emerged from the lake, Nevina found that she had become an angel tutani!

The council told Nevina that her transformation wasn’t permanent; Nevina was to stay on the island for a year as a Island Guardian. An Island Guardian looked over those who found a refuge on the island and knew when to put others’ needs over their own. If Nevina proved herself worthy as a Island Guardian within that timeframe, she would remain an angel tutani. If not, Nevina would revert into a hydrus kanis and was at risk of being kicked off the island!

Over the next several months, Nevina settled into her role as an Island Guardian. The angel tutani ended up becoming popular with many of the minions who found themselves on the island. One of them, a flarb, became so fond of Nevina that he followed her everywhere. In response, Nevina took in the Flarb as her own minion, naming him Nicolas. Overall, Nevina was happy with her new life. She had friends, good food, and a good home.

But another challenge was ahead.

One day an angel keeto named Sophie found herself on the island. The Tribal Council and the residents welcomed the keeto with open arms, and soon found Sophie to be a great asset to their community. It turns out Sophie was a budding mage who had mastered a few healing spells; the keeto used her talent to heal ailments and injuries.

A month after Sophie’s arrival, the keeto was talking with Nevina and a graveyard dillema about her life before she came to the island.

“My owner left Subeta and adopted out most of his pets except for me and my reborn yaherra sibling, Fyra. For the next couple of months, my sibling and I did quests for the quest givers to pay the bills. I frequented Quentin’s place quite often in the hope of getting Mage Amulets to sell. One day, I was at the Alchemist’s domain, hoping he would take me as an apprentice. Suddenly I heard a commotion near the Philosopher's Store. It turns out a human had gotten into an altercation with an Unliving Subetan and the wrestlers of the ZWE .”

“The Unliving Subetan, who had the Fevermore zombie strain, was arguing with the human because she owed him some sP for betting in the wrestling matches, and the wrestlers of the ZWE were in support of the Fevermore subetan.”

“The wrestlers did that?” Nevina asked in surprise.

“Yeah,” Sophie responded, “I think it was because the human made some condescending remarks about the appearance of the wrestlers and the Fevermore subetan. I stepped in and offered to pay the debt owed to the Fevermore subetan. He accepted the offer and left with the ZWE wrestlers. After they left, the human thanked me and told me she had been investing her money in bets in the ZWE to make some easy sP. After hearing her story, I invited the human to dinner. She continued to visit several more times over the next 2 months.”

Sophie continued, “Things took a turn for the worse when Fyra became ill and had to spend some time in the hospital. The human with the wrestling debt was the one to bring Fyra to the hospital. It turns out that before I arrived, this human had signed hospital documents stating that she was our owner! We had no idea until she moved into our home a month later, using the documents as evidence to force her way in.”

“Seriously? That’s extremely slimy. Who did that human think she was, pulling a stunt like that?” interjected the graveyard dillema.

Sophie frowned as she continued her tale: “This human made life miserable for Fyra and me. She held disdain for Fyra’s hobby of collecting bugs and my apprenticeship with the Alchemist. The human wanted me to participate in pet beauty pageants to raise money. The cash prizes are decent, but I really didn’t like the atmosphere at these pageants. Many of the owners and their pets were snooty and looked down on anyone who didn’t match their high standards. I didn’t even win first place once. Our “owner” claimed it was because I told the judges that I was an apprentice to the Alchemist. She threw a fit at me once because I accidentally stained my fur after one of my visits to the Alchemist, claiming that I had lowered my overall appearance.”

“Eventually Fyra and I snuck away one night to find another place to live. We were traveling on a ship to the Omen Islands when a fierce storm occurred. I ended up falling into the water while trying to save a couple of minions from going overboard and drowning. I ended up climbing onto some cargo that had been thrown overboard and passed out. When I opened my eyes I ended up here.”

“What was this human’s name?” asked the graveyard dillema.

Sophie answered with a word that chilled Nevina to the bone.

A few nights later Nevina was awakened by Nicolas’s barking. The angel tutani followed her minion and discovered Sophie building a boat. It turns out Sophie had heard that the council was considering to transform her into a human as a reward for her kindness and good deeds. Such a honor was not given out lightly; fewer creatures became human than creatures who became island guardians. Sophie, however, was worried that she would lose her Keeto powers once she became human. She pleaded with Nevina to help her off the island in order to remain a Keeto and find her sibling. Nevina was hesitant but ultimately agreed. A few nights later the boat was complete. Sophie got into the boat and Nevina pushed the boat into the ocean. Nicolas, not one to miss out on a good adventure, hopped into the boat as Nevina was pushing the vessel. The plan was for Nevina to guide the boat past some of the dangerous obstacles surrounding the island so Sophie could get out safely.

Much to the pets’ dismay, after many miles of sailing they got caught in a fierce storm. Nevina was scared but determined to help keep Sophie’s boat afloat. Both pets fought tooth and nail against the storm while Nicolas howled wildly. Eventually the storm dissipated and an extremely tired Nevina pulled herself onto the boat to rest.

Nevina heard a familiar voice telling her to awaken and opened her eyes to a most unbelievable sight. Standing over Nevina was the darkmatter swampie she had lived with! Apparently, Nevina’s sibling had been traveling with the pirates and had rescued the angel pets after being drawn to them via Nicolas’ howling. Nevina convinced the swampie that she was indeed her long-lost sibling and the two embraced. Sophie, Nevina and Nicolas lodged on the pirate ship for several weeks while the pirates and the darkmatter swampie completed the task they had set sail to complete.

After the pirates landed back in Port Plunder, the darkmatter swampie took Nevina, Sophie, and Nicolas back to Leah’s home. Leah was shocked but overjoyed to see her old pet, and the human’s heart went out to Sophie after hearing her story.

“Don’t worry, Sophie. I promise you I’ll do everything I can to help you find your sister Fyra. You can stay with us in the meantime.” Leah said with a smile.

Leah’s graveyard mallarchy, who had remained quiet while Sophie and Nevina were telling their harrowing tale, spoke up: “Strange that Nevina’s old owner and Sophie’s owner were both named Marie.”

At these words, Nevina began to cry. Sophie hugged the tutani and gave a look that she’d suspected as such for a while now.

Fyra was eventually found, surprisingly thanks to the efforts of Leah’s darkmatter fester! Apparently the fester held concerts and get togethers with her fellow metalheads, where she spread the word about Sophie’s missing sibling. One night after a concert the darkmatter fester announced that a pet who had attended the concerts was good friends with a reborn yaherra who loved bug minions. Tears of joy were shed at Fyra and Sophie’s reunion. More happiness came when a few weeks later, Leah announced that she wanted to adopt both Sophie and Fyra.

A few months later, Nevina was approached by the blacklight yaherra who had rescued her all those months ago. Apparently Nevina’s choice to guide Sophie off the island was being frowned upon by the council because Island Guardians who were under the year long probation period were not allowed to leave the island except on specifically assigned missions. As the conversation continued, both the yaherra and tutani realized that Nevina was still in her current form way past the time limit. After both pets traveled back to the island and the council, it was determined that Nevina’s choice to help Sophie and reunite her with her sister had been the necessary unselfish act for Nevina’s transformation into an angel tutani to become permanent. The council let Nevina go back to her family, with the promise that she would continue to act as a guardian. Nevina went home and began to travel the ocean alongside her darkmatter swampie sibling, rescuing pets and minions in danger of drowning in the vast ocean.
