Beatrice the Mutant

Her parents went to church twice a week and her sister was the angelic lead singer in St. Anthony's Choir. She had been taught to say the Lord's Prayer before she'd mastered tying her shoes. Almost every major event worth photographing in her childhood years had featured the family priest and a crowd of other nervous children in private school uniforms.

For all that, Beatrice wasn't the least bit religious.

* * *

She got her first tattoo at thirteen, a subtle pattern of twining lines that formed a few budding roses in the shape of a "B". Her ugly shirt and skirt proved useful in helping her to hide this mark of rebellion that would see her grounded for every weekend until she turned 18. By 15, she'd managed to acquire piercings in each ear, though she kept the holes small and came home with two little golden crosses. Her parents were unhappy but tolerant, figuring if this was their daughter's worst act of rebellion, they could live with it.

* * *

She never really got her sister's obsession with music until her 16th birthday. That was the year Smash the Square had their first #1 hit. "Break Yo Square" was a cheeky mixture of inspiration, teenage angst, and a promise of "Rad things will come and meet you there, when you break yo square."

The music touched some deep, hidden place inside her. She could break out of the boring box that contained nothing more than school, bible study, and weekend service. Smash the Square was the first rock CD she'd ever bought. She would lay in bed when the rest of the family was sleeping, listening to the lyrics through the neon purple headphones her cool aunt had given her as a birthday present.

The tie-dye DJ tryout poster in the window of the local burger joint was meant to grab the eye, and it certainly caught hers. She didn't know much about DJs. The last party she'd been to had been a baptism gathering for a cousin's baby. She longed to be one in the crowd, feeling the music through the soles of her feet as a live band played. She'd seen such things on TV and the audience always seemed so energetic and full of life.

* * *

Her parents thought she was at prayer group, the day she attended the tryouts. When her turn came, her hands were shaking. She started to skip the records as she'd seen others do. The beat came to her and something deep down replied. It was as if the whole room was responding to her mood. Couples moved a little closer and even the people staffing the event seemed to find a rhythm in twirling trays and plucking up empty glasses.

One of the club's organizers was wearing a cheesy grin when he walked up to her. "You really got the beat, kid."
"That's why they call me Beatz."

Her saucy grin didn't waver when he handed her the permission form that would allow her to take the job. The way she was feeling, her parents couldn't say no. They were always going on about how her guardian angel would let her know when she'd found her true calling. The way she was feeling, that blessed cherubim must be holding a flashing neon sign that read "DJ".

* * *

Her mother ranted for a solid ten minutes about the evils of such music and her father tore up the form. Her sister (the rat) had been saving up to reveal her hidden CD collection. She was grounded for three months, her TV was taken from her room, and her mother would personally see to it that she said a repentant round of prayers every evening until she settled on a more reasonable life course.

That night, she ran away from home.

Not before she snuck into the kitchen drawer and traced over her mother's signature. She had to have that job, no matter what the consequences.

As much as she loved Club Caliente, Beatz was so afraid of her parents finding her out that she could not stay there for long. She took a few local gigs, never staying in one place for too long and living on the ramen noodle diet. She never complained after spending a night sleeping on someone's doorstep. Her witty remarks and sassy replies flattened critics and won her admirers, though she never stayed in one place long enough to make a true friend.

Then she discovered the truth about herself.

The club was a little place called The Groove Line. The band of the night was an up-and-coming new age rock act that called themselves Pumpkin Guts. Their lead guitarist (the heart throb Autumn Stemm, formerly known as Matilda Steminski) liked to have a DJ as backup when the members of the band were ready to take five...or fifteen...or fifty.

Stemm approached Beatz directly. "You got real talent, kid. We got 'em rocking but you keep 'em rolling. Whatever it is you got, I hope it's contagious, because I want it."

Even when she felt overwhelmed, Beatz' quick tongue never let her down. "I'll give you the number of my witch doctor."
Stemm laughed and raised her drink glass. "Out of sight, girl. You are okay. By the way, love the mask."

Beatz reached for her drink glass that sat on a little ledge next to the DJ booth. She caught her reflection in the shiny metal that made up one wall. Two small horns jutted past her lip. They shrank before her eyes, convincing her she must be seeing things in the room's weird lights.

She watched herself on the next set. Every time she played, the horns became more extinct. When one of the live bands took the stage, the horns would gradually shrink and disappear.

Though she was scared, she could not cease coming back for more. As she became accustomed to this odd feature of her anatomy, she noticed something else.

She had always mistaken the thrumming at her core for the killer sound systems in most of the clubs. Now she realized that these vibrations came not from a speaker system, but from her own body. When she swayed to a gentle melody, couples inched closer together until their bodies were touching. When some high-energy beat got her tapping her feet, the tension in the room was electric.

Had her parents known this would happen? Was that why they had treated her so differently from anyone else?
If this was the life of the condemned, she considered it heaven.
