Hit me with the bullets you make up in your head

My first introduction to Conchita Wurst as an artist was when she competed in, and won, the Eurovision Song Contest in 2014 with the song Rise Like a Phoenix. To this day it is still one of my favorite Eurovision songs ever. She owned that stage and managed to fill it in its entirety by her mere presence even though she never took a single step during her performance.
Since then I have listened to all the other music that this artist has made and I have to say that I love it. I love the duality of it all. The beauty of the songs sung as the feminine Conchita character, as well as the more edgy songs, often with a societal commentary in them, sung as the more masculine WURST character.
Honestly, as I’ve pretty much already stated, I love most of the songs that I’ve listened to with this artist, whether it’s being sung by the Conchita or WURST side of Neuwirth. But, despite that I will still make a list of honorable mentions because I think that these songs are all brilliant in their own way even though they didn’t make it onto my top ten list. And the honorable mentions are: Bodymorphia, Trash All the Glam, Satori, See Me Now, Under the Gun, Kuku, Truth Over Magnitude, Forward, Colours of Your Love, Where Have All the Good Men Gone, Somebody To Love, Firestorm, Lovemachine (ft. Lou Asril) and The Other Side of Me.

Hit me with the pain that you came to get

I also love Conchita’s cover of Alanis Morisette’s song Uninvited as well as the Bronski Beat cover of Smalltown Boy that WURST did together with Ricky Merino. There were also many beautiful covers of other songs on the From Vienna With Love album but to me they all kinda pale in comparison to the Uninvited cover which just has a bit of a sinister and almost eerie sound and feel to it when Conchita does it, compared to Morisette’s original version of it.

Hit me with your threats that were left unsaid

In tenth place I have the song You Are Unstoppable. I’ve always had a weak spot for uplifting songs that are meant to help you feel stronger mentally. And this is a song like that. And paired with Conchita’s gorgeous voice it’s just a winning concept for me.
Next up we have the song Heroes. This one is such a beautiful song, with lyrics and a video that makes you think. And again, paired with Conchita’s vocals makes it even better.
In eight place we have the song To the Beat. This is the first WURST song on my top ten list but it won’t be the last. Again, this one has great lyrics. It’s a commentary about how you shouldn’t listen to what bullies or the like tells you about yourself, and how they see you. Brush it all off and walk your own way, to the beat of your own drum.
In seventh place we have another Conchita song. This time it’s Out of Body Experience. I love the Arabic sound of this song. It’s just such a joy to listen to for me.
Now, in sixth place we have the song Pure. This is such a beautiful and emotional song. I love the lyrics, despite how sad they are.
Halfway done with the list now as we move on to the song that’s in fifth place. And it’s Up For Air. Now this one is a great pop song that also has great lyrics. And I love how it builds up during the verses and then basically explodes into the chorus and then you get what feels like a soaring moment before the next verse.
Now, in fourth place we have Malebu. This one is just pure fun for me. I love how lighthearted it is. And how in-your-face, and unapologetic, the video is for it. This one just makes me smile whenever I listen to it. And the fact that both the song, and video, have a bit of an 80s feel to them only makes it that much better according to me.

Hit me with your bull and don't dare to pull back

Time for the top three songs on this list of mine. And first up we have the number three song which for me is the one that opened up my eyes for this wonderful artist in the first place, Rise Like a Phoenix. First time I heard it I remember thinking that it sounded very much like a song from a Bond movie. Now, I haven’t watched a single one of those movies and have no intention of ever doing so, but that doesn’t mean that I don’t like the music that goes along with them. On the contrary. I think that there have been many great songs from those soundtracks. And Rise Like a Phoenix has a sound that makes it sound like it would fit right in with the rest of them. And then it also has great lyrics. And, like I said in the beginning, it is still one of my favorite songs from the Eurovision Song Contest.
In second place we have Put That Fire Out, which is another song of Conchita’s that has an uplifting message. This one is like an anthem for the LGBTQIA+ community. Telling the community to never listen to the people that want them to be quiet and not be seen. Instead, make more noise and make sure that no one can avoid seeing you and hearing your voices.
Now then, which song is my absolute favorite? Well, it is none other than Hit Me. Even without knowing the history behind this song it is still such a strong song. I love the sound and I love the lyrics. And then finding out that WURST wrote it in response to an ex-boyfriend that was sending threats his way just makes it that much stronger of a song for me. It makes it mean even more to me. And I recommend watching the video of the live performance of the song from the Amadeus Austrian Music Awards 2019, just because it makes it even more effectful in my mind.

Hit me with the blame you made up in your head

As I said at the start I love both sides of this artist. The beauty of Conchita and the edgier WURST.
Many of WURST’s songs have a message in them commenting on society’s idea about different things. Usually something about how people that are breaking the norm in different ways are viewed differently by society. WURST hits back with how those things that make people different is what makes them stronger. It’s a message that was also prevalent in the album that was released after Conchita Wurst won Eurovision in 2014. And it’s a message that I wholeheartedly stand behind.
I absolutely love Conchita WURST and think that the world needs more people like this that aren’t afraid to stand up for their own, as well as their communities, rights.
And I will be looking forward to listening to more amazing music by this artist as it is released ♥️
