Valgrim was created by some long-forgotten mage, for some long-forgotten purpose. Eventually the mage perished, but Grim remains animated. He developed his own sense of survival, seeking out minerals to replenish his body and avoiding treasure hunters that seek his life-giving Heart.
He roams the mountain ranges endlessly, perhaps in search of a new purpose as well as the best bits of clay to eat.
