HUMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM....
HUMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM....
The humming doesn't stop. It's a constant rythm underpinning the unbearable summer heat. The warm weather might be nicer if it weren't for the freaking bugs! They're everywhere. I swear, I ran into more spiders this morning than I saw all winter. You'd think the bugs would come in running from the cold, but these buzzing creepy-crawlies don't know what's good for them! If they did, they would shut up.
But the sound comes from all over. It feels like I'm being haunted. Is it the wall? The ceiling? The bathroom? Did my neighbor buy a fancy new electric toy? Shinwa, the constant screeching! Cicadas, June Bugs, Wasps... they should put insecticide in the sprinkler heads to ease the burden. There aren't enough birds in the city (no, the world...) to kill all these noisy, overpopulated insects!
Missy Princessy would know. Every morning there's a new pile of bugs sitting in the corner. At first they appeared on my pillows, the shells and ichor matted in my hair when I turned over in the morning... The only thing worse than a dead bug is a live one. Missy, you four-footed freak! I love to have an exterminator, but bugs make a terrible gift... Leave them outside, would you?
The bugs stopped appearing on my pillows in the mornings. But they cropped up in piles, in the corners: crushed, piecemeal corpses. Milipedes, june bugs, caterpillers, beetles... the small legs spread out like fine dust around the heaps, leaving mostly shells. I found piles in my cabinets. Stashes under rugs. It was a real roach motel, except I was certain that any roaches looking to play house wouldn't make it! Missy found herself a real hobby in bug-killing. I was sweeping twice a day, once in the morning and again after work, to keep the corners clean.
After months of our game of keep-away, the bugs stopped. No more crusty heaps of centipedes and horseflies. Oh Shinwa, so many blessings from the end of summer! Oh, Missy... we've had our differences, but you really are a good feli. She rubs her forehead into my palm and hums "purrrrrrrrr." I fondle around her horns. She hops off my lap to curl on her velvet pillow in the corner, her silver fur glistens from a crack in the blinds, and something else near her paw....
I look beside her pillow, behind the bookcase.
Maleria be miffed! A cache of bugs spills out when I pull the shelves from the wall, assembling into a shimmering pile. Missy! You pretty kitty....
I let out an exhausted sigh. The pile is enormous, spilling out from the wall. Jewel beetles, catterpillars, fireflies, shiny feathers and strings... they look more like treasure, heaped like a pirate's coins. Missy looks at me with guilty eyes, meowing and pawing at my wrist as I look over the beetles.
"mew!"
She cries. Aw. This is her treasure. Really, there are worse hobbies for a cat, I think. After all, I do hate bugs... they're prettier dead.
