Spotlight
I found my home in the sewers.
My curiosity got the better of me when I allowed myself to fall.
How was the world down there? I wonder...
After seeing me wade through the waters, abandoned and alone, the residents who lived there took me in. I've never seen the light ever since, but perhaps it's better this way. The rodents considered me as one of their own, and they were all I had. Sometimes my dreams would tell of brilliant skyscrapers and rolling hills I'd like to believe I saw once, before I went underneath.
Unlike above, there was no sense of time below. We relied on those who came up everyday to get supplies. It was a daunting task. Everyone shared their own stories of terror and trauma whenever they attempted to go up. Most returned injured, but there were those few unlucky ones... They left even before dawn broke out and when they returned, we knew the evening has come.
Life wasn't that bad in the sewers.
Every day, I helped the rodents clean up the waterways. My tail could easily sweep up water for washing and carry those who couldn't reach the upper nooks and crannies. When stubborn pieces of wood blocked passageways, I could just tackle or break it with my jaws.
Our free times were full of laughter, splashing and wading around. As simple as cleaning the sewers might sound, it wasn't as easy as one might expect. When we swam, we considered it a well reward for our hard work. The rodents would ride up my back and I would move around the sewers and carry them all around. We would play hide and seek but I was almost always "it." By the time we would finish with everything, those from above would come down just in time for dinner.
"What would we do without you?" The rodents would tell me that everyday. In the same way, I would never imagine what I would do if it weren't for them. In fact, I can't imagine what my life would be like in the world above.
I was an alligator. They were rats. But in the sewers, they said, we were all the same.
