Looking cautiously behind him, making sure nobody was following him the young orphan stealthily made his way through the crusty corridor of the ancient building. Only the beam of a tiny flashlight illuminated his pathway through the halls where shadows were at play. A slight breeze caught the curtains of a nearby open window, allowing the orphan a feel of the chilly summer air outside. All around him the house was filled with an eerie silence, as he crept further into the night. At last, only the creaky oak stairs were the only obstacle preventing him from walking out the screen door into the summer evening. Apheros clutched the star-shaped pendant in his pocket, breathing a silent prayer that the Head Mistress wouldn't come tiptoeing after him, preventing his midnight journey...
Shivering slightly in the chilly summer breeze Apheros gazed intently into the clear dark summer sky. Several objects jiggled in his pockets, the remnants of a life-long since passed but not forgotten, a reminder of his parents. In his arms he clutched a rugged worn-leather journal, a gift from his mother before she forever disappeared. Tucked inside of the journal was a water-logged and faded letter written loopy calligraphy, a note from his mother. Also tucked within the pages of rugged volume was a worn photograph of a beaming three-year old child standing next to his mother and father outside their New York apartment. A small bag clutched at his side contained a dusty atlas of the stars, containing information of on all of the constellations in the sky. Standing beneath the shade of an old oak tree, the child stared at the sky waiting in eager anticipation. For weeks in advance, the child had carefully planned his escape to watch the meteor shower, hoping to catch a shooting star...
Years ago, when he was young his mother had sang to him a familiar tune:
"When you wish upon a star
Makes no difference who you are
Anything your heart desires
Will come to you
If your heart is in your dream
No request is too extremep
When you wish upon a star
As dreamers do
...
Like a bolt out of the blue
Fate steps in and sees you through
When you wish upon a star
Your dreams come true"
