The crew didn’t agree on much, but upon this matter they did; he was by far the strangest captain they had ever worked for. In fact, the only reason he had become a captain in the first place was that his father had left the boy a ship. He was still not much more than a child, which was obvious by the assortment of squishy and shiny objects he carried around with him wherever he went, but the stubble on his chin grew slowly. “One day, I’ll have a beard like yours!” he would comment to the Bosun. Bosun grunted as he always did, but he quite liked the kid, and was paid well.
His name was Oberon, his father having been a lover of all things Shakespearian, but the name did not suit him well, and so everyone called him Bron, which he quite liked. Much to the amusement of the crew, Bron very much enjoyed speaking in rhyme as did so as often as he possibly could. Occasionally he would shout from the crows-nest “I am Cap’n Bron of the seven seas! Even the Kraken is scared of me!” The truth was he hadn’t sailed the seven seas. He hadn’t even sailed one, as since the ship had been handed over to him he had spent more time decorating it with trinkets than he had directing the crew where to go, so the ship had remained in port for nearing on 6 months. All Bron wanted was an adventure. To sail out in search of pirate treasure and discover new lands, but without a mission and without a map, he was stuck. No one would hire a child Captain and his motley crew. But soon an assignment arrived.
It came with a seal, as all important letters did these days, carried by a squire of sorts. The somewhat dishevelled lad came aboard and loudly announced that he was here to see Captain Oberon. The first mate eyed the messenger warily, but shuffled towards the main cabin area, where Bron was most likely to be found, using the sextant to carve patterns into his desk. Sure enough, there he was, carving the shape of a Kraken. The mythical creature was a fascination of his, which the crew all endured, having been at sea long enough to understand the tales.
“Man ‘ere to see you Cap’n,” the mate growled. Bron looked irritated, and pouted ever so slightly, but placed down the sextant carefully and sighed.
“I should stop what I’m doing, I see, and listen to what this man says to me.”
Together, Bron and the mate stepped onto the outside deck.
“Captain Oberon?” The messenger exclaimed, in rather a high-pitched voice.
“I am Bron of the seven seas; even the Kraken is scared of me!” Bron responded, wriggling his shoulders higher in order to seem taller than he was. Although the messenger seemed confused at the age of the so-called Captain, he shuffled forwards slowly, head bowed in submission, and handed the boy a large piece of paper, folded and sealed by a rather official looking stamp. Bron’s eyes went from the messenger to the mate, to the letter, and then back to the mate again. He broke the seal gingerly, and read silently, his lips moving. The crew all stood in silence, watching and waiting. After what seemed like an eternity, Bron breathed in heavily, and exclaimed
“Men, we have an important task. You must each do just as I ask. An adventurous man needs to sail, we shall be rewarded if we don’t fail!” The silence spread as Bron poked his tongue out to taste the air.
“If we are to catch the tide, we must sail ‘morrow sunrise!” Awkwardly the mate coughed and leaned down to whisper in Bron’s ear. The young Captain stiffened slightly, but then blinked and continued.
“I may have spoken far too soon. We shall sail tomorrow noon!” The crew all cheered. They were tired of the port and watching other ships come and go. Bron waited for silence, and then turned to face the squire. “Tell your master to be here, else we shall miss the tide, I fear.” He then turned, and disappeared back to his quarters.Back in the comfort of his cabin, Bron reopened the letter and read again.
Dear Captain Oberon. It read, in a swirly print. My name is James Edwards and I am in need of a good ship and crew, with a captain brave enough to venture out into dangerous seas. My brother was a sailor, and was adventuring across the seven seas, following a map, in order to find the treasure our great grandfather buried. His mission did not succeed, and I have been left with the task of finding an able-bodied crew and a ship to find this treasure. Due to the danger involved in this task, many other ships have turned me down, so I turn to you, brave Captain. If we succeed, you shall be rewarded greatly. If you accept my request, I am able to sail immediately. I look forward to your swift response. Yours sincerely, J. Edwards.
Bron smiled to himself, then folded the letter again and picked up the sextant.

Morning came faster than he had expected, and Bron awoke to the sound of his crew banging around on top deck. He arose from his bunk, and blearily made his way out into the morning sun. A tall man stood on deck, and turned swiftly at the sound of the cabin door slamming shut. He bowed low, doffing his crimson plumed hat, and in a booming voice greeted the Captain. “Good morning, sir. I am James Edwards, and I am pleased to meet your acquaintance.”
Bron shuffled forwards and offered a tiny hand to the man.
“I’m the Captain, call me Bron. ‘Tis my ship you’re standing on.”
James laughed pleasantly, and took the young master’s hand in his grip.
Then the Captain stood, as tall as he could at 160 centimetres, and mustered his crew.
“Sailors, men, friends of mine. I would like to sail on time! Raise the anchor, loose the ropes, mainsail set, there’s wind I hope! Off to adventure, let’s make haste, treasure’s out there, no time to waste!”
The crew darted from port to starboard, and back again. This was an old routine to them, and they had very much missed the open ocean air. They were ready. They’d been ready for months, and now was their opportunity. Stores had been checked. Water levels were high. The sails had been repaired to perfection and the ship rats were fat. Bron ran up the short flight of stairs to stand at the helm, his right arm resting on the ships wheel. Although his head barely showed over the top of the wheel, he watched as his crew scurried about, and he grinned, a big boyish grin that split his cheeks. His chest swelled with pride. This is exactly what his father would have wanted. His son, adventuring across the ocean.
“Come on men! There’s no shape like ship shape! Let’s sail!” he shouted across the deck at the top of his lungs, even forgetting to rhyme in his excitement. As the ship slid away from the dockside, Bron wiggled with anticipation, then turned and ran toward the mainmast, leaping with child-like energy. He shimmied part way up, then swung from one crosstree to another, gaining height as he went. He loosened a frap, letting the mainsail free slightly, catching the late morning breeze.
“Let the mainsheet free, I say” he called to a sailor below him. “Let us sail away today!” The sailor loosened the last rope holding down the sail, and as it billowed out almost majestically, the crew watched, smiles on all of their faces. James Edwards had positioned himself at the ships bow, a map held tight in one hand, and a compass in the other. He breathed in deeply, a thrill running down his spine. Bron laughed as he climbed the final few feet to the crow’s nest, the highest point on the whole ship. He watched as the dock below him disappeared from view, faster and faster as the wind caught in the sails. He turned his face to the sun, feeling the warmth on his cheeks, and the rush of wind through his hair. Then pulling together every ounce of energy he had, he turned to face the ocean, puffed his chest out and yelled at the very top of his lungs
“I am Cap’n Bron of the seven seas! Even the Kraken is scared of me!”
