"Hush now, my story. Close your eyes and sleep. Waltzing the waves; diving the deep. The stars are shining bright, the wind is on the rise. Whispering words...of long lost lullabys."

The ocean was a cruel mistress who could lead one to riches or ruin. So many took to the azure waves in search of treasures beyond their wildest dream. Many never found what they were looking for.

Sophus Riyola had been sailing the 7 seas for years. He and his crew were known to be fearless treasure hunters, with no payday being to dangerous or risky for them to pursue. Sophus prided himself on having earned his title of "The Treasure King" within the world of sailors. But try as he might, he never managed to find the one treasure he set out so many years ago to find.

Sometimes when the sea is quiet, and his crew doesn't need his immediate attention, Sophus will go and lock himself in his quarters. From his bookshelf he pulls down a book older than he, and allows himself to be transported into a memory. A memory of a woman holding both he and the book on her lap, pages flipped open to a picture of a whale painted in watercolors. Her voice as clear now as the day the memory was made.

"Sophus my love." the woman would say, "Do you want to hear the tale of Karu the Divine?"

As he sat on the bed - tired and aged from too many dangers at sea - Sophus closed his eyes and remembers his mother. Everything from the stormy greys of her eyes, to the rich brown of her hair, to the long soft white sweater she would be found in.

"Sophus darling. There is a tale I want you to remember. The tale of Karu the Divine, and the song of the sea." he remembers her saying while running her fingers through his hair, "Legend tells of a place where mermaids dwell, my love. A vast, glorious place with more treasures then you can ever imagine. Whatever you wish for will be there, waiting for you. But the entrance is not easy to find, as it's on the edge of the sea."

He remembers her telling him of Karu the Divine whale. A magical creature who answered you in dreams, and if he found you worthy would lead you to the entrance at the edge of the sea. Sophus had been searching for any hint that he'd existed since his first time out at sea. Hoping to find any sign of the magical being. Now here, 15 years later, he still had nothing to show for it.

Of course he'd dreamt of Karu. How could he not? But they always seemed to be fantasies and not communication with him. He would call out to the whale in his dreams, but all it ever did was turn away from him and disappear to somewhere he couldn't see. And he'd wake with no more knowledge of the entrance to the mermaid's home.

"Perhaps I'm not worthy...perhaps I never will be." Sophus mutters to himself in his dream. He is once again on the beach and in front of him once again is the watercolor whale, "Is that why I've never gotten you to talk back to me?"

The whale stared not unkindly at him, a peaceful smile on his face as he floats in the water unbothered. Sophus stands and walks to the edge of the water a tired frown on his face. "Please divine one. Tell me what would make me worthy. There is something I wish to find, and must only be found in your home."

THERE IS NOTHING THERE FOR YOU LITTLE ONE. a voice spoke in Sophus' head suddenly.

Startled was an understatement. The man's eyes widen before he dropped onto his backside in the sand, never taking his eyes off the whale. The whale who had finally spoken to him.

"I...you spoke...to me. Am I only imagining this, dear whale?" he gasped out, "Please tell me this is not just another dream!"

IT IS I. IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN ME, LITTLE ONE. I JUST HAD NO REASON TO ANSWER YOU BEFORE.

"Then...you heard me before? Wait! What do you mean there is nothing there for me?! The stories! The stories always said that whatever you wished for would be waiting for you!"

AYE. WHATEVER TREASURES YOU WANT WILL BE WAITING FOR YOU. AS IT'S NOT RICHES YOUR AFTER, THERE IS NOTHING THERE FOR YOU.

Sophus could not respond. He simply stared at the sea dweller. Before he could stop them, tears began to run down his cheeks. All his searching, all the years he'd desperately tried to find Karu...had been for naught. A drawn out bellow made him look up but instead of the whale, a woman stood in the water staring at him.

Wake up, my story. Do not fret. For I am with you in your dreams my love, and that's where I shall stay. she spoke as a fog rolled in around her.

Sophus found himself startled awake suddenly by a sharp jerk of his boat. As he stood to get his bearings, he remembered the book on his bed and turned to grab it. What he saw made him stop short.

The book was opened to a page he didn't remember existing and a woman smiled up at him from it. Her rich brown hair flowing in the wind, and her stormy grey eyes crinkled lovingly.
