”Spinning fast, a piece of my past, calls me to wonder at where I have been…”

It seems so far away now, the lively bustle of the carnival on opening day. The scent of popcorn and cotton candy floated on the warm, gentle breeze, rides whirring to life as patrons exchanged paper tabs for timeless memories. Music filled the air, guiding the patrons past the popping balloons and flashing lights of the games to the heart of the carnival; the carousel.

The good and the bad and the bold and the nature of sin, up and down, and in and out…”

Horses, tigers, dragons; every animal that could be dreamt up danced and twirled around, carrying patrons in time to the Carousel Waltz. Laughter sang in unison to the bright tones of the melody, spinning in circles and watching the world become but a blur. Such uncensored joy; how we thought it would last forever…

”Forty years dust that has gathered about, the pieces of youth that we scattered around, when we danced the Carousel Waltz…

Paint chips litter the ground unveiling the cracked illusion, the deadened core of a once lively and vibrant dream exposed. Once vivid colors splashed across the metallic and ceramic shells now fade to all shades of grey, mixing with the dust and dirt of the decayed carnival. The brilliant facade is shattered, leaving hollow shells and distant reminders of a world all but forgotten.

”The red and the green and the blue go the same shade of gray, monochrome image of colored events…”

Rust has long ago settled into springs and gears, lyrics broken down, twisted into unrecognizable noise. Shrieks of foreign words echo off the metal frame of the carousel, the tinny melody nothing but a ghost of the tune once danced to.

”Now we're forcing rhymes, of simpler times, the paint on the ponies is fading away…

Trampled are the dreams of my brethren who now lie fallen at my feet, crushed beneath the footfalls of time. Ended are the days we danced and hummed with energy, circling round and round till the day’s last ray of sun slipped away, replaced by eerie silence and dank scents of mildew from disuse.

”The years come and go with a whisper, the calliope drowns out the age, we glow and we fade in the roles that we've made, ‘til there's nothing but ghosts on the stage…”

No longer does the laughter sing harmony to the voices of the carousel. No longer do smiles cut through the gloom of the night air. Only silence awaits, greeting those that remain, beckoning forth into the grasp of oblivion. Only promises of obscurity wait beyond the veil between the living and the forgotten.

”The miracles came and the miracles went while we danced the Carousel Waltz.”
