"Congratulations! You have been chosen as a candidate for the colonization of Planet 416!"
It would have been better labeled Death Sentence.
His father blanched as he read it aloud, his mother cried, while his younger brothers and sisters clung to his arms with wails.
No one had ever returned from Planet 416. They had tried to colonize it for centuries and yet it all ended the same. Failure. They had run out of volunteers and instead been forced to choose candidates. Each year they sent out little blue envelopes sealing your fate. His crush had been sent and never returned just like everyone else. What was on Planet 416 that was so vital that they continued to send their people there? Surely whatever it was could be taken from the many other planets surrounding them?
There was no denying a letter issued by the government unless you wished for your death to come early. He had almost contemplated it, however he had no desire to force his family to watch him die. At least if he died on Planet 416 his family wouldn't see. He could only hope it would be painless. He never did have a very high pain tolerance.

"Be safe, Wren. We love you so much...!" His mother had sobbed and he looked pleadingly at his father. Taking the hint, his father pried her away as the officers directed him out into an awaiting vehicle. He adjusted his bag and looked back at the profiles of his family standing in front of the home he loved before shuffling after the officers.
The trip felt like only minutes had passed before he was arriving in front of the rocket that would send him to the planet of his doom. Others were there, some whimpering and sniffling while more were staring vacantly as if they were still processing the entire thing. Their items were taken and thrown into the rocket while officers escorted them into the spaceship itself.
It was a massive and beautiful vehicle, sleek in its design and built to carry a load of twenty plus two bags from each if necessary. The name of the ship read Discovery on the side and he couldn't help but bark out a laugh, ignoring the heads that turned to face him. Discover what? The bodies of the other unfortunate souls that had been brought on a similar vessel?
They were put into seats and buckled in, two rows facing each other with ten on each side. There wasn't much room and his shoulders were jostled by the ones around him. A hologram appeared in the middle of the room, the President grinning toothily as she paced back and forth in the aisle as if she were there herself.
"Greetings! You are the lucky twenty that have been chosen as candidates for this incredible journey. We thank you for the service you will be providing for our great nation. You will be arriving on Planet 416 within the next twenty-four hours. During that time, our lead Scientist Loren Snyder will be briefing you on your mission. Safe travels and remember," her grin seemed to widen. "You are the future of our nation." Her form flickered and they were plunged into darkness.

Lights suddenly illuminated under them, tracing a path up the cockpit and above them on the ceiling. Nineteen petrified faces greeted him, shadows twisting their faces into hopeless despair that he assumed was mirrored on his own face. The officers had left during the President's spiel and he could hear the doors being closed and sealed. The whole ship began to shake and one of the candidates burst into hysterical wails which was soon joined by a few more. Wren bit his lip to keep from crying out himself as the ship began to accelerate, the force pushing him into the female next to him.
10...9...8...7
The rocket began to lift and quake all the more.
6...5...4...3
He gripped the chair arms with enough force to crush them as the spaceship ascended, rattling as it breached the atmosphere.
2...1... Hyperspeed engaged. The breath was sucked out of his lungs as the ship launched into hyperspeed, his ears ringing at the supersonic boom that sounded as the Discovery propelled itself through space.
"Greetings candidates." He cracked open an eye to see a new hologram was in the aisle. Unlike the President the head scientist was lean with an look of indifference on his face. "I will be explaining the planet to you." A picture of a round blue ball assaulted them and over it came the voice of Loren. "The world is mostly made up of water. Creatures other than the inhabitants are on the planet and rule over jungle and water territories. There are billions of inhabitants on this planet, more than any we have encountered. They are..." It was hard to hear him over the rocking and roaring of the ship and he saw some of the others had passed out. Not many were even looking at the hologram, and he wondered if Loren cared that this information was useless to them presented like this. Had the President meant to do it this way?

"... planet's inhabitants and creatures are both deadly foes. They are merciless and cruel to all they encounter. NEVER trust an inhabitant of this planet. You will rendezvous with a group of our people already situated on the planet." Now Wren was listening and he sat up suddenly to pay attention. There were survivors? Then why had everyone acted as if they were all killed or dead?! "Once there," Loren continued as if he hadn't just dropped a mind-blowing revelation, "you will be given disguises so that you may better blend in with the inhabitants. The supplies and materials we harvest from this planet are vital in the next phase of the President's plan." What plan? "I will leave you with a few examples of the inhabitants so you may learn their mannerisms to better integrate with them once you reach Planet 416. Good luck candidates."
The scientist's form was replaced with videos and pictures of the inhabitants of planet 416. They were hideous, fleshy creatures, with screechy voices as they snapped and cackled at each other in a brutal language. Various languages actually if the videos were correct. How many languages did they speak? He flinched as explosions sounded and watched as the inhabitants tore each other apart with weapons of steel and fire, screaming as they did so. It was so unbearably loud and he whimpered as scene after scene flashed by revealing the loud, rude, and violent nature of the inhabitants they were about to meet. How have they not killed each other yet? What was so important that they would send them to a terrible place such as this.
Now arriving, Planet 416
The rocket began to slow and smooth into an easier ride and Wren leaned forward as the front of the ship opened up to reveal a massive window. Ahead of them lay Planet 416 in all its terrible spleandor.
Welcome to Planet 416, the robotic voice monotony stated. Known by inhabitants of this galaxy as Earth.

Human Disguise

Info: Wren comes from an alien race known as the wulfenciid. To describe it in human terms, he looks like a cybernetic werewolf. There are different types of wulfenciid and in our language, Wren's would roughly translate as the assassin breed. Lean and built for speed with hidden blades within the folds of his body. What looks and feels like metal to a human is actually flesh. While appearing to be cyborg wolves, they are indeed fully made of flesh regardless what some pieces of their bodies appear to look like to human eyes. Wulfenciid are creatures that are brutal fighters with equipment, weapons, and technology that would terrify even the most evil heart. However they choose to use these for peaceful means and are more agriculturally based.
