I love my people and our society, but I've never felt like I belonged there. Not all the time. Visiting is wonderful, but I just feel like there's so much to learn and do out in the world. I want to go see, to learn...And I want to forge the things we need of metal, to design our helmets, to work so closely with my--claws--and the metal and the heat and the hammers and anvils...I can't learn that at home, I need a blacksmith. There is only one we truly trust with our helmets. But how to get to him...?

Travel was fine, mostly, since her people were so intelligent collectively. It was saying something to travel and find nothing in particular which she couldn't adapt to, but humans were a strange bunch and tended to treat her like an animal, a pet, who had lost her 'owner' and always asked her where her owner had gone. She didn't have one! Didn't they understand?

Obviously not. That very fact also kept her from where she truly wanted to go to--the blacksmith in the Darkside who forged her people's helmets.

A very strange human with a peculiar collection of very happy creatures approached her one day, asking what she wanted.

Wanted! Humans didn't normally care what they--Escalade or otherwise--wanted! But the human offered to take her to the blacksmith for employment, to learn the trade and to forge her people's helmets, and she didn't even have to become one of her 'pets' to do it!

Her human. She had done just what she'd said, so that human became her human, and she worked hard at the blacksmith's, for her people, and for her human.

The prism child's affections were a small price to pay (since the little one mostly just slept in her tails like any child of her own people would have done) for reaching her goal and learning what she most wished to learn.
