Turning Over a New Leaf

I sat down at the station and gripped my ticket tight to my chest, this ticket was a fresh start away from the urban life. I heard the soft chugs of the steam train making its way to the platform. With a laboured sigh the train came to a halt and the doors opened welcoming me to a new world.

The cabin smelt of cut grass and fresh fruit, it was nothing like the foul smelling subway of the city. My eyes wondered catching glimpses of fellow travellers, maybe they were starting a new life as well.

I stared out the window, watching the trees and hills rush past. Occasionally a small village would break up the scenery with billowing smoke rising from chimneys. The country side was so idyllic, beautiful scenery with no care for the hustle and bustle of city living.

For a brief moment a flash of guilt panged in my stomach; just remembering the life I was leaving behind, my job, my parents and my friends. But I knew we would still keep in touch, they could always visit, my new town was just a train journey away. We could even keep in touch via letters, that would be nice.

As I was daydreaming out of the window a soft voice broke my imagination. My head whipped around to see one of the other passengers, a blue and white cat with a smart sweater on looked concerned

“Hmmm, Uh… Excuse me… Do you have a second? Could you help me out? Is it… Let’s see now… twelve o’clock on Thursday, the eighth of November Twenty Twelve?”

I nodded in agreement. “That’s right!”

The cat sighed in relief. “Say, thanks! You’re too kind! Really, you’re a big help.. Mya ha ha ha ha howr!” His laughter stopped abruptly as he asked “So, you mind if I sit here? I promise I won’t fall asleep, tumble onto you, and start drooling on your shirt!”

The specifics in that question made me wonder if he was sincere in his promise or not. It sounded like he’d done that before. Hesitantly I answered “Please!”

He purred loudly and heaved himself onto the seat. His tail curled around himself. “Thanks again! It sure is nice meeting friendly folk on the train… You aren’t a psycho, right? Just kidding! Say, by the way… what’s your name?”

A little offended and uncomfortable with what he was implying I answered “Tasha.”

He seemed unaware of my discomfort and carried on, “Hrmm… Well… Hrmmm… Tasha… Now THAT is an odd name. Mya ha ha ha howr! Not that my opinion means much. What matters is, do YOU like the name Tasha?”

I am in fact very proud of my name and think it suits me perfectly. Nothing odd about it. “Isn’t it cool?”

His ears perked up, he appeared to have noticed a tone in my voice. “Oh, I’m sorry! Did I say it was odd? It’s not odd! It’s a great name for a boy! Really. It’s a really great name. Mya ha ha ha ha ha howr!”

I was getting agitated at this point, was this cat blind? “I’m not a boy!”

His ears laid flat in defence “Oh, whoops! You’re a girl? Hmmm… How embarrassing… Yup. Real awkward… Hey, I oughta apologise!”

I sighed and looked defeated. I’d struggle to tell the difference between a male and female cat so I understand where he was coming from. “I forgive you.”

His ears perked back up and he was grinning like a Cheshire cat. “By the way… If you don’t mind me asking… where are you headed?”

“Steeple.” The name of the town I had decided to start anew in. Something about the name drew me to it, it sounded almost whimsical.

He nodded as if he knew the place “You’re going to Steeple?”

I wondered if he hadn't heard me properly. “That’s right.”

“Hey! I know that place! Steeple is one of my favourite vacation spots! So, what are you going to Steeple for?” He seemed generally excited for me.

My mind went blank, I knew I was going for a fresh start but I didn’t truly know why. I was just drawn out this way. “Don’t know yet.”

He recoiled in shock, you could almost see the physical shock appear around him. “What?!? You don’t know yet? Are you out of your tree? Well, we obviously need to find you a place to live!!! …Oh, wait! Boy, am I dense! This buddy of mine runs the shop in Steeple! Let me give him a jingle! This’ll take me two seconds. Wait right here, OK?”

He disappeared for what felt like slightly longer than two seconds. I heard the odd word of his conversation over the telephone, I thought I heard the words Steeple, place to live and Nook. I assumed that Nook must have been the person on the other end of the line.

“Bye!” He hung up and came back to perch on his seat. “OK, I’m back! Miss me? Mya! Well, good news for you! It sounds like my buddy has some brand-new houses for sale, dirt cheap! The work’s all done, but he hasn’t been able to rent them. He wants to unload then, so he’s willing to take a loss. You have money, right?”

I had been saving for my move yet I hadn’t been able to save as much as I would like. I definitely did not have the kind of money to buy a house! Ashamed of my saving skills I answered sheepishly “Just a little…”

My tone must have resonated with the other passenger “Oh, really? No wonder you look so helpless. But don’t worry! These things have a way of working out! They say money makes the world go ‘round. And what goes around, comes around! …Wait, I’ve confused myself. Oh! Looks like we’re about to pull into Steeple. Did I mention I love this place? Remember things are never as bad as they seem. Honestly! Good luck and all that! Maybe we’ll run into each other again sometime. Well, good-bye!”

And with that the conversation ended. There was a feeling in my heart that this would not be the last meeting with this cat, he seemed so sure we’d see each other again that it resonated within me. I smiled and nodded good bye and opened the train doors.

I stepped out and I breathed in the air of my new home.
This is where I was meant to be.
