Under a blood red sky and a blackened tree

Sits a little girl all but the age of three

She sits there and hugs a tattered rag doll

She whispers tiny secrets yet the doll says nothing at all

With eyes a dull blue and dressed in rags

She’s been here for years but seems not to age

The sun has died and the sky is diseased

As she lays herself to sleep, praying the angels her soul to keep

Her innocence is gone, taken by hateful hands

A demon in the guise of a man

As she clutches her dolly ever so tight

She prays to the heavens to set things right

And beneath that tree she will wait

Until loving arms enfold her, taking her away from this abusive state

When this time comes, she will leave her beloved tree

All that will remain is a tombstone of a girl who died at the tender age of three

Pity is all he could feel as he looked down at the small child. Abandoned and abused by ones she thought loved her. Her tiny, frail body was marked with bruises which hid scars both new and old. In her arms was a tattered doll which clearly saw better days. She wore nothing but a thin night shirt which was tattered and torn. Sighing, he checked his paperwork and even though he hated his job at times like this, his boss wasn't one you wanted to piss off. A soul needed to be collected and he was on a deadline. Yet he had no children to be taken tonight so he assumed she died only a few hours ago. Gingerly, he placed his hands over the child and softly pulled her soul from her body and held her in his arms. She stirred a little but remained motionless as he turned to leave but spotted her doll still clutched in her arms before picking it up and placing it in his pocket.

He started off home leaving in his stay a small gust of wind and nothing more. He was thankful this was his last job for the evening because after this, he needed a stiff drink. He had hope the small child would remain sleeping but after the night he was having, he knew it was too good to be true as the child began to stir. He prayed she wouldn't scream as he hadn't changed his appearance to something more child friendly but she just stared at him, her big blue eyes meeting his. Even though her physical body was gone, the soul for a few hours still retains some of its features such as temperature change and hunger so it didn't shock him when she began to shiver. Instinctively he wrapped her in the folds of his robe and held her tighter until she stopped shaking. He smiled and continued back to headquarters where he knew that she would be taken away to a much better place

An hour later, he arrived, only to have his boss waiting for him.

"You are an hour late," His boss remarked, looking at his watch.

" I am sorry, sir but something came up, an unexpected diversion." He said, pointing to the sleeping child in his arms.

"I see, I'll inform the Children's Division they have an unexpected arrival." His boss replied heading to the phone but not before he stopped him

"Sir, may I have a request?"

" No, I am sorry but we are prohibited to keep souls, they are not pets and shouldn't be seen as such"

'I know sir ." He said , as he looked down at the child, " Maybe perhaps for a few days, you know we are swamp this time of year and i could watch her until things quiet down."

His boss looked at him as he cradled the girl, softly rocking her. He sighed and put the phone down.

" Only until things quiet down and then she must be sent away, understood."

"Yes sir, " he said, a smile returning to his face. He pulled the doll out of his pocket to give to her before his boss stopped him.

" Perhaps a better doll is needed" he replied, pulling a doll from his desk and tossing it to him " This would be better don't you agree."

"Yes sir" he exclaimed before leaving to return home with the small girl still sleeping safely in his arms

Just as he was leaving, a woman entered, her eyes met his and they both nodded to one another. Her arms full with paperwork and a cup of tea.

" You're getting soft, first that young woman and now letting one of your Reapers adopt the soul of a child. " She exclaimed, setting down his tea. He just smiled back at her and grabbed his drink.

" Don't you have work to do?" He replied, giving her a sly smile

" Yes Repper, Sir" Said his assistant, as she left the room. Repper leaned back in his chair ,sipping his tea and smiling.
