Life Excerpt

He woke up as someone was calling his name. As he took a deep breath he started to cough rather violently. The air was thick with smoke. Just as the realization of what that meant was hitting him he was pulled out of bed.
-”We have to get out of the house before we’re...ugh...burnt alive in here.” Despite everything happening so fast Silmarith still had time to observe that Talrinn was moving a bit slower than usual. And there was a pained expression on his face as he ushered the elven king out of the bedroom, after having Silmarith throw on his silken robe.
-”What’s going on? Why is the building on fire?” Talrinn shook his head.
-”Not now. I’ll...explain it all once we’re outside.” As they entered the main area of the house Silmarith saw that the situation really was dire. The majority of the big room was ablaze and despite the loud noise of the raging fire he could make out the sounds of the house as the structural integrity was worsening. Movement to their left made him stop focusing on the terrifying flames and instead his eyes met the eyes of his personal servant, Jaeth. The young elf was looking even more terrified than what he imagined he himself did right now.
-”Your Highness, you need to get to safety!” It was touching to see so much concern in those young green eyes. He nodded and could then feel Talrinn’s hand on his back, urging him on. As they reached the middle of the room there was a loud crack above them. Instinctively Silmarith shoved Jaeth out of what he perceived to be the imminent danger. Seconds later Silmarith found himself on the floor with a heavy burning beam across his back. He cried out in pain at the heat from the flames touching his back. Then the weight started lifting, and as he looked to his right he could see Talrinn lifting the beam with his bare hands. Silmarith wanted to call out to him to stop since it was burning his hands but he knew all too well that his beloved Talrinn would never listen to something like that, Not even if he ordered him to stop. Jaeth appeared in front of him and grabbed his arms, pulling him out from under the beam. Just as his feet cleared the beam Talrinn let it go. Before even taking a single step he swayed and stumbled a bit. Something was clearly wrong, and whatever it was it hadn’t been helped by having to lift the heavy beam. A short moment later he steeled himself against the pain and started ushering the two of them toward the door once more.

Once they got outside they headed for one of the nearby trees that was far enough away from the building that it wasn’t at risk of catching on fire. Talrinn leaned his back against the tree trunk, clutching his side as he sank down to the ground. It wasn’t until now that Silmarith noticed the red wetness blossoming on Talrinn’s teal coat. He hurried over to his lover’s side and knelt beside him.
-”You’re bleeding! What happened?” Talrinn looked at him with a concerned look on his face.
-”They found us. I tried...I tried to stop them but...” Silmarith shook his head.
-”It’s okay, my love. I know that you always do your best.” The sound of someone running toward them made both of them look in the direction of the sound. Jaeth was heading toward them from the direction of the nearby road.
-”There was a wagon travelling along the road! They want to help!” Talrinn grunted in pain as he grabbed his sword.
-”They might be allies of...the ones that...attacked us...” Jaeth shook his head vigorously.
-”They’re not!” Silmarith gave the servant a confused look.
-”How can you be so sure?”
-”Because they’re definitely not from back home. Or...anywhere near here at all. It’s...a pretty weird group of people, to be honest.” Just then the horse drawn wagon came into view and Silmarith could see what young Jaeth meant. It seemed to be an eclectic group of travellers. There was some elves among them but also other species. Some of which he’d never seen before. As the wagon stopped two women hurried over to them. One was a young looking elf and the other one looked like a mouse of some kind. What was clear was that they wanted nothing more than to make sure that all of their injuries were cared for and treated.
