It was that time of the month for Marahute.

It won’t be long now, thought the cybill as night began to cloak the land. Soon those familiar sensations would overtake her body as the moon slowly rose over the horizon to begin its nightly vigil.

Marahute walked across the permafrost until a glowing light in the distance caught her attention. Was it a snow fairy? Those creatures were known to be encountered by Subetans this time of year. Or was it another totem rock? Determined, Marahute spread her wings and flew to the glowing light.

When the angel cybill landed next to the glowing object, Marahute was disappointed to find that the glowing object was just a random blue crystal growing in the ground. Her disappointment was suddenly superseded by a sudden and all-too familiar pain that pierced her entire body.

It was that time again.

Trouble had followed Marahute ever since the day she was born.

The cybill was born into a pampered family of cybills. Within a few weeks of her birth, Marahute’s parents observed the baby cybill exhibit some strange behavior. Marahute’s mother would sometimes hear her make strange noises and display a sudden, great increase in physical strength. All these strange occurrences happened during the nighttime hours.

The true catalyst came on a night after Marahute turned 5 years old. The young cybill was playing in her room when she suddenly felt her body racked by pain; it was so great the young cybill could not remaining standing. Scared, Marahute cried out for her parents. Marahute’s mother rushed into the room and screamed in horror. Marahute was hunched over the rug with her body growing in size, her feathers turning into a dark shade of blue, and sheets of ice spreading across the room. Eventually the pain receded from Marahute’s body, but the cybill looked completely different. She had two tusks hanging out from her beak and was almost twice her normal size!

Naturally, Marahute’s parents were horrified by the sudden transformation of their daughter. Marahute’s father went to anyone he knew that might have answers for what had happened to his daughter. After several years Marahute and her family found out the truth, but the truth was something they never could have imagined….

Years ago, Marahute’s mother had caught the eye of a young male fester. The fester developed a crush on Marahute’s mother, who was a silver cybill, and attempted to woo her. However, Marahute’s mother treated her fester suitor with disdain due to the fact that he wasn’t from a wealthy family and therefore often could not afford to take her out on her preferred types of dates. For example, the young fester once took Marahute’s mother out to a local burger joint. The fester happened to personally know the manager and some of the staff who worked there, and he started showing Marahute’s mother the specials the restaurant offered and how the chefs would prepare each item on the menu. Yet Marahute’s mother showed no interest; she rather would have gone to a high-class venue that served various types of sushi. Another time the young fester asked Marahute’s mother out to a local country hoedown, but the sliver cybill refused and went with another suitor to a fancy ball located at a resort. When Marahute’s mother began dating her future husband, she told the young fester that she had no interest in marrying a country fool who wasn’t going anywhere in life.

The young fester was heartbroken and inconsolable. Unfortunately, this rejection proved to be a grave error on the part of Marahute’s mother. The young fester happened to have an aunt, a hydrus fester, who was skilled in the magical arts. She was enraged that her nephew had been treated so horribly and decided to seek revenge. Using her magical knowledge, the hydrus fester created a curse using some ice and some feathers taken from Marahute’s mother. The curse made all the female children of Marahute’s mother turn into werewolf-like beings every night the full moon was in the sky. The curse also gave those affected great ice powers; they could create ice formations and freeze objects at will.

As previously stated, it was several years before Marahute and her family found out the reason behind her transformation every month when the full moon was in the sky. Marahute’s mother did not take the fact of her daughter’s condition well at all. The silver cybill kept a very strict eye on her daughter whenever the full moon was close to appearing due to her fears about how their reputation and social status would be impacted if Marahute’s transformation became public knowledge. Marahute was forbidden to leave the house or even be near a window on nights when the moon was full.

Eventually Marahute was sent away to live in the Arctic Frost with her uncle, a blacklight cybill. Marahute rarely saw her parents after she moved away; they usually came while on a business trip or during the fall months. Marahute’s uncle, on the other hand, was very supportive. He took Marahute on a trip to ShadowGlen to meet the Mage, hoping that the Mage could teach Marahute to control her ice abilities. The Mage agreed to tutor Marahute in ice magic, and for 4 years Marahute honed and refined her ice abilities.

When Marahute’s mother found out about her daughter’s lessons with the Mage, she was furious. The silver cybill never envisioned her daughter going into the field of magic. Marahute’s mother wanted her to instead become a prestigious businesswoman respected by the Subetan elite, and the silver cybill belived that would never happen as long as Marahute remained cursed. Marahute’s mother insisted that Marahute shouldn’t even need magic lessons since the end goal was to remove the curse, which would likely result in Marahute losing her ice powers. Marahute’s uncle countered by saying that a cure for Marahute’s curse had not been found, so the next best thing was to teach the young cybill how to control her powers so she wouldn’t cause harm to others.
