Life Excerpt

For a moment he just stood there, looking at all of the groceries. Mere seconds earlier all of it had been neatly packed into the two paper bags he’d been carrying. But now they were spread out on the pavement in front of him. As his mind started to get back to reality he noticed that the guy he’d bumped into was helping to put it all back into the paper bags. Teddy shook his head in an effort to get fully back to reality, before crouching down and joining the cleanup of his grocery accident. He looked at the other guy with a sheepish look on his face.
    “I’m so sorry. I couldn’t see anything. What with the bags covering my view...” The elven guy paused what he was doing after putting another item in the bag closest to him and looked up at Teddy. There was a strange green glow about his eyes but for some reason that didn’t make Teddy feel any less safe. He felt strangely calm in the elf’s presence.
    “No worries. I wasn’t really paying attention to where I was going or what was around me.” Teddy smiled.
    “I guess we’re both to blame then, huh?” The elf gave him a warm smile that made Teddy feel a bit warm and tingly inside.
    “I guess so.” He stood up, holding one of the bags. “There we go.” Teddy looked around a bit bewildered. All of his groceries had been picked up without him noticing it. He grabbed the second paper bag and stood up as well.
    “Wow, thank you so much for helping me.” He made for grabbing the other bag but the elf didn’t hand it to him.
    “I think it would be safer for you if I help you carry these home.” He winked at Teddy and smiled.
    “Oh...thank you. That’s really nice of you.” Just then he looked at his wrist watch and immediately got a panicked expression on his face. “Oh my God! I’m gonna be late!” His new acquaintance cocked his head to the side a bit as he looked at Teddy.
    “Are you okay?” Teddy looked at him.
    “It’s just...I’m supposed to make lunch for my boyfriend and have it done for when he gets home during his lunch break.” The elf smiled reassuringly at him.
    “Then I guess we should get a move on.”


While heading for his boyfriend’s apartment Teddy learned that the elf was called Rah’den. They talked the whole way there and the more they spoke the calmer Teddy felt. When they got to the apartment Rah’den helped him with putting the groceries away while Teddy made lunch. The elf only left when he was sure that Teddy was okay and calm. Right before he left Teddy made the rash decision to ask that they exchange numbers so that they could see each other again since they got along so well.
The following two weeks Rah’den came over for a couple of hours about every other day. Every time it was when Josh (the boyfriend) was at work. They spent those hours talking about most everything.


Sixteen days after bumping into each other Rah’den was coming over right after lunch for the first time. Every other time it had been before lunch.
When Teddy opened the door Rah’den was shocked by what he saw. His new friend was wincing with every movement, clearly in pain. He was trying to hide it but to Rah’den it was clear as day. He stepped forward into the apartment, and closer to Teddy, and gently put his hands on Teddy’s shoulders as he bent his knees a bit in order to look his friend straight in the eyes.
    “What happened? Who did this to you?” After biting his lower lip for a few seconds Teddy tentatively responded.
    “It’s my own fault. I knew better. He...he doesn’t like me spending time with others when he’s not around. E...especially with other men. I knew that...”
    “Wait, what!? Your boyfriend did this?”
    “He...he gets jealous, that’s all...” Rah’den shook his head in disbelief before pulling Teddy into a hug, which led to Teddy wincing again, and Rah’den subsequently hugging with slightly less intensity.
    “How could a person that’s supposed to love you do something like this and still claim to care about you?”
    “I...” Teddy started to respond but was cut off as the elf continued.
    “If you were with me I would cherish each moment with you.” Rah’den moved Teddy in his arms so that they were able to look into each other's eyes. “And I would make sure that no one, least of all me, would ever hurt you.” Those words were said with such sincerity that they went straight to Teddy’s heart and without even thinking he went up on tip-toes, threw his arms around the elf’s neck and kissed him passionately. No one had ever said anything like that to him before. And it wasn’t until now that he realized how much he’d been craving it. He knew that it was wrong but he didn’t want the kiss to ever end. Rah’den was enjoying it too, but all of a sudden he broke it off. Right before Josh’s angry voice could be heard behind Teddy.
    “What the hell is going on here!? Get the hell away from my boyfriend!” Josh was now right beside them and moving to grab Rah’den by the front of his shirt while also pushing Teddy out of the way. As Teddy was stumbling backwards he could see that his boyfriend was more livid than he’d ever seen him before. But, before he had a chance to feel worried about Rah’den’s safety the elf brought his own arms up and shoved Josh away from himself. And it was a powerful shove because Josh was pushed halfway across the room and almost fell over the wooden coffee table. Mere seconds later the elf was standing in front of Josh and grabbing the collar of his shirt before hoisting him up into the air.
    “How dare you even think that you have any say in what Teddy does? After what you put him through?” The more he spoke the more of a growl could be heard in his voice. Josh was struggling to get loose, but no matter how tough he was trying to play Teddy could see the fear on his face.
    “Let me go, you freak!”
    “Oh, I will. But not before you promise to stay the hell away from Teddy.”
    “Fine! You can have him for all I care!” Rah’den kept holding him for a little bit before throwing him onto the coffee table, which broke from the impact. Crouching down next to him Rah’den added with a fierce growl.
    “And if I ever see you anywhere near him, or if I find out that you’ve been bothering him in any way, you’ll be in more pieces than your coffee table when I’m through with you.” He stood back up and went over to Teddy and gave him a loving embrace. “Come on. Let’s get your things and then get you settled into my apartment.”
And when they left the building Teddy couldn’t help but feel like he was getting lighter with every step he took away from his old life.
