On a cold october's evening, a knock sounded as the family Berndt was having supper. Alarmed by the late hour, the father stood up from the table and answered the door. It was a not too big, but not too small either, female bear who held her head low. "Dear sir, can I be your table guest for tonight? Because of my frolicking in the forest I forgot to fatten up for the coming winter. I am becoming too tired to either fish or hunt and most berries are eaten by the deer."

As Mr. Berndt was about to shut the door, Mrs. Berndt joined her husband at the door with the most gentle smile. "Please, do come in. I hope you like pumpkins, we have plenty," she said.

The bear looked up with a sparkle returning to her eyes and nodded wildly. So, Mrs. Berndt set the table next to little Uwe. Who was in awe of the giant fluffy mass that sat next to him on the ground and still reached father's height. Mother took the squash she had completely hollowed out before and filled it with soup she made from the meaty part. Birgit, the second child and only girl, wiped her hands on her apron, cut three slices of the pumpkin seed bread and buttered them richely and placed them next to she squash bowl of soup. "Here you go, bear. Enjoy your meal," Birgit's angelic voice sounded.

"You can call me Ursula or Ulla for short".
