Once there was The River, true to The Sea, whom ran from The Mountains--it was straight and narrow, but deep and strong. Before The River touched The Sea, it pooled into The Lake, and The Lake was one of beauty and peace; but things do not always remain in one state, and The River soon brought sadness to her calm waters.
One by one, three creatures entered The River to pass into The Lake.
The Horse had tried to cross The River, but found the whitewater too strong, and was overcome in seconds. Eventually, her bones had settled at the sandy bottom of The Lake in a few months after the current gently carried them down, a slow embrace.
The Deer's carcass was lost to The Panther as it dragged it along the bank, and parts of the antler, spine, hooves, and skull gathered and deposited over the Horse in a slow, deliberate fashion.
A Girl was pushed off a bridge and found respite amidst the fate of the other lost souls in the bottom of the lake, clutching her body in the eternal cold of the season of her death.
The Lake felt, and listened. The Lake despaired, and became a salt lake from her tears. The Lake then created.
The Selchies were born--the body of a strong horse, brave to cross the whitewaters. The antlers and hooves of a deer, fast and quick to run from the darkness that would chase to smother but dangerous enough to turn and face it. The voice and the soul of a girl, to speak and to haunt, to lure those unworthy of the lives they lived and to feed the Lake and cure it of the sadness it felt for the less fortunate it cradled.
The Selchies began their work, and the The Salt Lake waited for the sadness to end.
