Bacchus is the Roman god of the harvest, grapes, wine, nature, fertility, revelry and theater. Among the major gods of the pantheon, he is the Roman equivalent of the Greek god, Dionysus. The name Bacchus derives from bacca, the Latin word for berry. He is strongly associated with Faunus (Roman god of the wild, forests and nature). His entourage is typically comprised of fauns, satyrs, nymphs, maenads and centaurs. His many animal symbols include the tiger, panther, leopard, bull and serpent. Bacchus is also symbolized by wine, grape vines, ivy, figs and the thyrsus staff that he often holds.
