Hydi had suffered one of the worst miladies known to man.

A broken heart.

It all began when Hydi was selected to become a suitor for Prince Sapphire, the heir to the throne of Starlandia. Many of Hydi’s family and friends thought that she was basically guaranteed to become Prince Sapphire’s new wife. For Hydi herself was a princess. She was an angel donadak that had known balls and castle since birth.

When Hydi had arrived to the castle of the Starlandia rulers, she was formally greeted by the king and queen alongside five other princesses. The donadak later found out that Prince Sapphire’s parents were conducting a search to find the most perfect princess in the land for their son.

Over the next several weeks, each princess spent personal one-on-one time with Prince Sapphire, discussing their hobbies and interests. Hydi fell hard for Sapphire’s charm and grace. Eventually all of the princess were expected to take various tests to determine whether they were the most perfect princess in the land. Hydi was hopeful but nervous as well. The donadak had a good grasp on the social graces but tended to stutter in conversations if she was nervous. Hydi felt far more confident when it came to her non-princess studies. She had earned excellent grades throughout her life and had even made various inventions that were utilized by the castle staff in her kingdom. After the princesses completed the final test, they went to their rooms to rest for the night. As she drifted off to sleep, Hydi felt that she had done well. At one point all the princesses were expected to recite a poem from memory. Hydi had stuttered a couple of times as she began reciting the poem but was able to complete the task without much of an issue. That was the only hiccup Hydi encountered as she went through the tests.

Two days later, the princesses were informed of the results. To her dismay, Hydi found that she hadn’t been chosen. What made the situation worse was the ultimate factor in the decision. Unbeknownst to any of the princesses, a pea had been placed under the 3 mattresses in their beds in order to determine each princess’s sensitivity. If a princess felt the pea under the mattress, she was sensitive enough to be a good ruler. Out of all the suitors, only one princess had felt the pea under the mattress. In fact, the princess who had felt the pea under her mattress had been unable to sleep well due to the discomfort of feeling the pea!

Naturally, this revelation was met with some backlash. One princess literally began screaming that the whole thing was rigged and stormed out of the castle in a rage. The queen hastily defended the decision by stating that the results from the other tests had been combined with the results of the secret sensitivity test. Hearing such did not help to improve Hydi’s spirits.

Hydi returned to her home kingdom and was despondent for several weeks. Her parents, especially her father, were shocked when they heard about Hydi’s failed courtship. Hydi’s father held a strong displeasure towards both the sensitivity test and the fact that the princesses had not been informed about the test beforehand. Eventually Hydi recovered her spirits and channeled her energy into serving her people as best as she could. She continued researching and inventing.

Several years later, Hydi had managed to create elaborate inventions that had revolutionized the kingdom’s industry and health care. These successes naturally brought the angel donadak great respect among the other kingdoms. One day, Hydi learned from the delegates of another kingdom that a great monster was threatening all the kingdoms. This monster had used her powers to charm male civilians into mindlessly attacking villages. In order to combat the threat, a princess alliance was being formed among all the kingdoms. Hydi had been sought out for the alliance due to her proficiency in inventing and healing ailments. Without hesitation, Hydi agreed to join the alliance in order to stop the monstress from tearing apart the kingdoms.

Hydi managed to forge strong bonds with two other princesses in the alliance named Forji and Illusionee. Forji was a determined reborn antlephore who had honed her fighting skills since childhood. Illusionee was a shy marsh qrykee who excelled at magic. With the assistance of the various kingdoms’ generals, Forji trained other eager young women into warriors. Hydi and Illusionee spent their days considering ways to counter the monstress’s powers in order to prevent the male soldiers from becoming entranced and turning on the alliance.

One day the alliance learned that a village near Starlandia that had been attacked by the monstress’s entranced admirers. The village had been ransacked and multiple people had been kidnapped, including Prince Sapphire! He had been at the village in order to obtain some needed resources for his kingdom.

Forji shook her head when she heard the news.

“This is clearly a bad day for Starlandia. Sapphire and his wife have been ruling the kingdom since Sapphire’s parents mysteriously disappeared about a year ago. Now that Sapphire is gone, I doubt Starlandia will be able to withstand the strength of the monster.”

“But Princess Silkia is still there, right?” Hydi asked. “Couldn’t she lead the army and defend Starlandia?”

“Seriously?!” Forji scoffed. “That princess has absolutely no experience in military warfare! Sapphire and the generals are the ones who have spear-headed Starlandia’s military efforts in this alliance so far. And we lost most of Starlandia’s generals to the monster’s spell during an attack on one of the southeastern villages in my kingdom several months ago. If this keeps up Silkia won’t have anyone to properly advise her in the war effort.”

Illusionee shrugged. Forji was clearly making sense.

“It doesn’t help that Silkia’s so physically sensitive either.” Forji continued. “I heard rumors that she only became Sapphire’s wife because she couldn’t sleep at night due to a pea being under her mattress. The poor girl is also prone to practically get food poisoning if her food isn’t prepared just right. I bet that dietary weakness puts a considerable dent in Starlandia’s treasury. Heck, I remember when my kingdom had a festival and Sapphire and Silkia were the planned guests of honor. Sapphire came but Silkia had to stay home due to getting a leg fracture from an accident that normally would just have bruises or a minor sprain. Just between the three of us, I doubt that Silkia will be able to survive long enough to bear a heir to the Starlandian throne. The bumbus trainees in my unit are more durable than Silkia!”

Hydi didn’t say anything, but her mind began to wander into thoughts of what could have been.

Eventually the alliance began to narrow down the possible locations of where the monstress and her minions were located. The alliance had made a base in Starlandia in order to fortify the kingdom. Hydi got to see Silkia for the first time since the day Silkia had been chosen to be Sapphire’s bride. The Starlandian princess, a common malticorn, was obviously putting on a brave face for her people but showed clear signs of stress. Silkia was skilled in art and was hailed as a local gourmand due to her sensitivity to specific ingredients. However, none of those abilities were very useful in wartime. She was undoubtedly out of her element.

Everything came to a head when Hydi found herself in the middle of a surprise attack. The angel donadak, Silkia and Illusionee had taken up camp in a valley near Illusionee’s kingdom and were discussing some inventions that the angel donadak had selected for the war effort. Suddenly the discussion was interrupted by a young soldier rushing into the princesses’ tent and alerting them to danger in the camp.

Hydi and her fellow princesses rushed outside to see a small horde of male pets fighting against the soldiers and wizards who had accompanied the princesses for protection. Suddenly, Silkia’s face turned white and she let out a sharp cry of anguish. Prince Sapphire was among the horde of rogue pets, and all signs indicated that he had been brainwashed by the monstress’ magic! Illusionee, who was very familiar with dealing with those under magical hypnosis, took the initiative and rushed towards the prince with the hopes of pacifying him.

Prince Sapphire scowled as he saw Illusionee charge towards him.

“This creature dares challenge one of the leaders of the fabulous federation? I should caution that even if you manage to overpower me, you shall be no match for the monstress. She will forever be more capable than a drab swamp dweller such as you,” the prince taunted.

Illusionee frowned slightly. Indeed, the marsh qrykee was not as physically attractive as most of the other princesses. Some of the citizens in her own kingdom even considered Illusionee less attractive than some of the shopkeepers’ daughters! But no one could deny that the qrykee possessed great wits alongside her excellent magical prowess. Illusionee spoke an incantation, and Prince Sapphire found himself encased in a sphere of darkness. The qrykee intended to make the prince unable to obverse the battle, rendering him unable to properly command his troops.

As soon as Hydi realized what her friend had done, she seized the opportunity and rushed back to the negotiation tent with Silkia in tow. Inside the tent, Hydi reached for a weapon that she and Illusionee had co-engineered.

Hydi turned to Silkia and stated, “Take this weapon. It will shoot pollen spores that will daze opponents and eventually knock them out after a certain time period of exposure. Try to keep the rouges from coming into the tent and stealing our war documents.”

As Hydi finished speaking, a cybil soldier rushed into the tent.

“My princess?”

Hydi and Silkia turned to face the soldier.

“Princess Hydi, I have come to take you and Princess Silkia to safety.”

Hydi nodded and replied, “Understandable. But right now we need you to stand guard while we secure all the sensitive documents. ” She nodded to Silkia, who took the cue and handed the pollen weapon to the cybil soldier. After 10 minutes the two princesses had packed their things and left the tent with the cybil soldier.

Smiley Pea

Hydi breathed a strong sigh as she sat outside the infirmary. The angel donadak could still not believe things had soured so quickly.
