What shows on the surface so often contradicts the simmering reality of what one feels beneath.

To the public, he appears to be a well-mannered and charismatic young man whose star is rising. Believed by many to be the Second Coming of the Detective Prince, his striving for perfection and carefully crafted celebrity smile have given him the chance to build a life of lies that, in reality, trembles on a framework of stilts shaped from spider silk.

He is a fraud of epic proportions.

When he acts cheerful, he is weeping internally. His mother's death was a bitter draught he was forced to swallow at a young age. Youthful years of being passed from one child institution to the next left loneliness as his only companion. He desperately sought love and approval.

These desires were nearly as impossible to achieve as his ultimate goal.

Revenge.

He'd been a child, not a fool. He was well aware that his mother's death had been no accident, despite what well-meaning child placement officials had told him.

Shido was the real cause. The notorious crime lord (politician, if you prefer) had left her with child and shame. She died of a broken heart many years before her true death.

Shido was also Akechi's boss. The young detective's fan base would be shocked to learn that their handsome celebrity was, in fact, a skilled assassin.

Perhaps the most painful contradiction of all is his friendship with Ren Amamiya, Leader of the Phantom Thieves. This was the one legitimate friend who allowed him to feel like a real person, not a victim of fate. This is also the one who has everything he never can, the one that fills him with jealousy and contempt merely by being in the same room.

His life is a tangled web of emotions still being woven.
