The small grove of poplars stood at the edge of a developing city, somehow ignored by city planners that saw all botanical life as an easily removed obstacle soon to be replaced by shopping centers and gas stations. The tree at the center was by far the tallest and most handsome of the group. On the highest branch hung a single, fat green bud that hung in defiance of the winter chill that was still in the air as winter grudgingly gave way to spring.
The bud slowly unfolds in the wee hours of the morning. Germinate (also known as the Spring Fairy) wakes from his bed at its heart, yawning widely and stretching his cobweb-thin legs. He takes to the sky with a whisper of misplaced wind, his tiny hooves reaching out to greet every branch and blade of grass he encounters. Many are old friends that have weathered the seasons with him for years while others are the descendants of such friends. All are dear and all respond readily to his green magic. Within the hour, the white world is showing its first hint of the green of Spring.
Despite his enthusiasm, this first gallop of the season is quite exhausting for the little stallion. The buds he shapes are not as vigorous as he might like and the Winter Fairy delights in breathing on them, doing his best to prolong his reign over the world a little longer.
Germinate wakes in dismay, seeing his first batch of magic laid to waste by his fierce and frosty rival. This time he sticks his muzzle deep into the heart of each bud, fortifying them with extra warm breaths and a hearty round of growth potential that will bow only to the strongest cold strike. The Winter Fairy has been howling and blowing for months. He does not have it in him to work up a really good storm and must unhappily admit defeat and flee north to his tundra realm that never feels the full power of the sun.
With each passing day, Spring grows in strength and beauty. Flowers that were once only promising buds burst into full bloom and animals of all kinds welcome young ones that test their unsteady legs on new grass. Germinate makes it a point to bless as many of these new lives as he can.
One morning he wakes to find a cloak woven from reeds and fresh flower petals, made for him by the beaks of robins and the clever claws of squirrels. He wears it proudly as he continues to welcome green things back into the world, taking magical seeds from the cloak and planting them in the unlikeliest of places, particularly when he works up the courage to enter the city and cast his blessing on those plants kept captive by humans in window boxes and flowerpots. (If you've ever wondered how a dandelion can root itself in the gutter in the middle of an otherwise plant-free city, look no further than the nearest tree grove blessed by the presence of a Spring Fairy.)
Spring gives way to Summer but the Summer Fairy is such a kind and benevolent force of nature that she will often share her piece of the world with the Spring Fairy, allowing the occasional cool-down to give the mortals a break from the sweltering heat that is her idea of comfortable. Sometimes the two will even roam together, chatting about the state of the forests and groves and sharing their fears for the simple humans that never realize what an affect they're having on the world they must share with other forms of life.
His relationship to the local Autumn Fairy is much more volatile...and fun! His secret crush and rival of many years, Germinate will never say no to one of her requests for a race. At first, he finds it fairly easy to hold his own but as the cold rains become more common and the precious leaves and vines begin to wilt under the first frosts of the season, his limbs begin to grow heavy and wilt. By this time the berries are falling from her crown and her leafy dress is looking a little worn. She escorts him back to his sheltering bud, saying farewell for another year with a sorrowful wave of her hand. He has never stayed awake long enough to determine where the Autumn Fairy makes her hibernation place, much to his disappointment.
As the cold winds begin to howl and the Winter Fairy once more shrieks in triumph, Germinate curls his body into the safety of his magical bed and prepares for a nice, long nap full of dreams of the greenery to come.
