Resident handymen Val and Earl had grown tired of being stuck in their jobs and decide to move out to Bixby. With their pickup truck packed full of their belongings, they hightail it down the road on the way to Bixby and a fresh start, or so they thought. They soon come across Edgar, another resident of Perfection, who was found clinging to the top of an electrical tower and unresponsive. After losing a game of paper-scissors-rock to Earl, Val climbs up the electrical tower only to discover that Edgar is dead, still clutching his Winchester rifle in his hands. The town doctor, Jim, had determined Edgar's cause of death as dehydration, but how can that be? It takes a few days to die of dehydration. What had he seen that scared him so, and why wasn't it afraid of his rifle?
After making another break for Bixby, they discover a local farmer's herd of sheep that had been brutally slaughtered. Val finds the farmer's hat on the ground and goes to pick it up, uncovering the farmer's severed head in the ground. In a panic, they race back to Perfection to warn the others that there is a madman running around and killing people. The other residents send Val and Earl to Bixby to get help because their phone lines are down. As they attempt to leave Perfection for the third time, they are confronted with a pile of rock and debris blocking their path out, as well as evidence of another 'murder'.
They have no phones, their road out of town is blocked and there's a killer on the loose. With no other options, Val and Earl saddle up on a couple of horses and start the trek towards Bixby yet again. All of a sudden, the horses stop dead in their tracks and become spooked and uneasy before throwing their riders off their backs. Almost immediately, a snake-like tentacle erupts from the ground and wraps itself around one of the horses. They shoot it to release its grip on the horse and in doing so, cause a giant creature to emerge out of the desert soil.
Graboid, a giant subterranean worm-like creature that preys on anything that moves above ground. They have hard, leather skin with spikes that they use to propel themselves through the ground. They lack eyes and ears, and rely solely on vibrations through the ground to detect and hunt down their prey. Inside their hard, beak-like mouths are three long tentacles that they use to grab their prey and pull it into their mouth. If you ever encounter one of these beasts, do yourselves a favor .... run don't move.
