There was water on the stovetop. Tea in the porcelain pot just beside, brewing slowly in the shivery, sweet air of spring.

Herbs hung from the kitchen rafters, strung carefully in small bunches to dry. Their colors faded with age and the crimp of dessication, but still a warm splash across the old wood of the walls. Banners over the shelves beneath, all bursting with preserves, remedies, fine smelling oils. (And those that perhaps, smelled a little less fine, but did their jobs just as well.) Jars of honey, bottles of shimmering dust and bubbling liquors, a saucer of sweetened milk that sat perfectly centered in the kitchen’s windowsill.

All throughout them chunks of polished stone and bunches of bright flowers. Tins of powdered chocolate and plates of tiny, mundane treasures. A thimble here, a cut of roseate coral. Three copper pennies and a small brassy ring.

The rocking chair sat in the far corner, tucked close to the fire that burned all through the long winters and now hosted only a few lingering embers. Small curls of smoke that swirled like the last gasps of dragons and the first breaths of stars. Heaped with too many quilts, worn and patched and still vibrant in the shades of shirts too well loved and slacks long outgrown.

Outside the world was fast and unceasing, passed dawn to dusk to decade in a flash of sound and thunder. Inside, between threshold and hearth, the air was thick with the fresh scent of flowers and the faint taste of summer dew. Of a moment the way it was remembered, rather than how it had ever been, strung carefully between the spokes of time’s quickly spinning wheel, like the herbs above the kitchen rafters.
