This world
It is said that once, when nothing existed, the trinity knows as the Three Fairies created this world. First, one fairy created men, beasts and animals – so that the world would be full of life. Then, one fairy realized that men were to week to compete with the beasts for food, so she gave them knowledge – and so, they could dialogue with the beasts and keep harmony. The third fairy realized that the world was too monotonous, and so, she created good and evil, and they would complete each other.
The world was then divided into three parts – the astral realm, where the creatures from good belong; the below realm, where the creatures who didn’t fit in would be; and the middle realm, where men, beasts and animals would belong. As good and evil were in balance, the creatures went back to sleep; and the world was left at peace.
Fairies forgot that, by giving men knowledge, they would grow smart – and some wouldn’t grow good. Men are beautiful creatures. They absorb energy like no other – good energy, and bad energy. Humans are capable of love, affection, desire, and most of all, sadness and hate. Hate is a strong feeling – it grows, and it spreads all over. Fairies realized that men weren’t capable of holding on to these emotions – and so, they created Nightmares.

Nightmares are amorphous, shadow-like creatures that grow on hearts of humans who accumulate negative feelings during their lifetime; if they stay In there too long and grow too much, the person holding it will suffer a lot of consequences, ranging from pain to insanity and occasionally, death – it is said that, in some cases, when it can’t leave the host’s body, it consumes them until the host becomes part of them. When the nightmare decides the human heart is too small for it to stay, it leaves its host body and starts hunting for food elsewhere – it feeds on humans and beasts. Depending on the human who hosts it, nightmares can shape-shift into different forms and sizes, depending on the person’s feelings – fears, hatred, and anything negative overall. They can, however, shape-shift for small periods of time to fool humans, beasts and animals and trick them.

When unfortunate times come along, the number of nightmares around the world raises greatly – war, hunger, diseases, they feed and grow on it. Eventually, the humans decided they had to fight them somehow; and so they asked for help from the fairies, who called upon the creatures from the astral realm. Twelve spiritual guides came down and decided to grant the humans help: the tiger, the dragon, the rat, the cat, the rabbit, the snake, the rooster, the ox, the monkey, the horse, the dog and the sheep. They decided to fight alongside the humans, and so the Zodiac was created: an association that unites humans and beasts able to fight against the nightmares in order to keep the world away from chaos. As the Zodiac grew, it turned into a huge elite company, that trains the best soldiers all around the world; humans and beasts from all sorts of places try to get in every year, however, competition is arduous and not everyone is up for the challenge.

The creature
It wakes up every twenty-five years, and goes to sleep only when it is finally done feeding; it hides inside the biggest, tallest mountain it can find, and when it is time to wake up, it eats the mountain whole and flies away in search of food. It gets bigger every time it hibernates.
Many call it man-eater, devil, entity, owl-demon; most know it by Emptiness, due to the feeling it brings when it comes close. It was first sighted after the first huge war up north – It appeared in the sky as a big black silhouette, as big as a mountain. It is known as the biggest Nightmare known to humanity. People use to say it doesn’t make noise when it moves or opens its mouth – nothing can be heard but a loud, static noise.
It has the appearance of a big, black chimera-like creature, with a masked face resembling a barn owl, with no apparent eyes but big hollow holes; it has big wings, said to create hurricanes on the other side of the world when it flaps its wings, and many say that when it opens its mouth to feed, a different dimension can be seen inside. When it comes close, the effects are immediate – people on cities nearby may feel depressed, lethargic, with a feeling of inner emptiness; suicides and insanity are common when it comes near.

Emptiness is, however, not an evil creature – although it was created by the humanity’s negative feelings themselves, it knows no good and evil; it lives to feed. Some say it used to have a mind, but eventually his entire being was destroyed, and so he became indefinable by this world’s standards; it is irrational and incapable of thought, existing only to create chaos.
Most definitely empty inside.
