A book he once read frequently comes to his mind in moments like this.

It had been the opening line of the book, and while he can still tell the whole story by heart, that line had always stuck out more than the others. Possibly because that story had begun so promisingly but ended so disappointingly -- the firemen burned the books without learning their secrets first, and the people who memorized the books did it to share.

He does neither. He commits the books to memory, and then he commits them to the flames. The knowledge is his and his alone, as it has been for centuries. It's become much more difficult since books have gone from painstakingly hand-copied to mass-printed, with millions of copies of the most popular in homes and bookshops and libraries.

It's irksome, but he can adjust. There's only so much lesser beings like this can do against one like him, one with infinite time, infinite fire.

Yes, he muses, watching this library go up in a spectacular blaze the way countless monasteries and museums and printshops have in the distant past, it was a pleasure to burn.
