Shiny the Aura

The residents in conifer forest were waking to the calls of birds and other creatures that were also rising to meet the day. However, a small creature still slept in his nest, his long feathered tail covering his muzzle. It was just a few minutes did the small creature wake to stretch his feathered limbs and give a small shake, flicking dew in all directions.
In the uncertain morning light, he blended well into his nest of twigs. It'd take a pair of keen eyes to make out his mottled brown feathers that turned white on his belly and on the underside of his limbs. Black stripe-like markings aided in his camouflage as did the irregular intervals of orange stripes that were more often than not under-lapped the black ones. The pattern almost mirror that of a blue jay's, but wasn't quiet like it.

Rich amber eyes glanced around the tree tops as a rumble caused the almost bird-like dinosaur to glance at his own belly. Groaning silently, he carefully navigated his winged limbs out of his nest and clambered on one of the forked branches to give his wings a quick grooming before he move to another branch and climbed even higher in the tree. Once he was at a good height, he leaped gliding gracefully through the canopy. He eyed several sunny spots for basking lizards or any microraptors that may be preening in the morning sun.

Luck favored him this morning, but it wasn't without risk. The microraptor was awfully close to the ground where the larger carnivores stalked the forest and with its back turned to him it made tempting prey. It only took a moment for Skyheart to decide. He was going to take that risk, he was hunting that raptor. It was too late when the smaller dinosaur sensed Skyheart's presence, its startled cry was cut off as Sky pin and silenced his prey was a precision bite to the neck as he applied his greater body weight. Even if the microraptor were to escape, in this case it couldn't, the venom he'd inject from his bite would have the desired effect despite the chance of losing it to the bigger predators.

Sky added his calls to the morning chorus that echoed through the trees after he finished his breakfast, letting the rest fall to the forest floor, and began his routine. He patrolled his territory leaving signs for others of his species that this was his area enter at your own risk. The day passed uneventful and held a few successful hunts.

As the sun began to sink a familiar sight blinked into his view; the one creature he considered a friend a large firefly.
"Hello Shiny." Sky chirped at the blinked insect as it landed on his head as he walked along the forest floor next to a rotting.
Suddenly the bushes rustled not far from him. Sky froze, heart thumping in his chest as another of his kind hop-ran-flapped past him. From the fear-scent she was leaving behind told him she was being hunted. His instincts to freeze in place served him well as a larger raptorid rushed past him intent on catching the female Sinornithosaurus.
Shiny blinked it's glowing light, oblivious to the danger, but that was all the insect needed to do to free Skyheart from his terror-frozen state. Without hesitation he rushed as fast as his feather legs could carry him, taking Shiny into his mouth where his little friend would be safe, and surged up the nearest tree. Effortlessly gliding from tree to tree he made his way back to his nest high in the trees did he set Shiny on a twig on the inside of his nest. Tracing a circle he settled into his nest letting out a soft sigh. Glad that he still got to live for another day in the hazardous forest where anything could happen.
