Long, long ago, there was a land yet unnamed; magic was rampant and it was not unusual to see varying creatures in all shapes, sizes, and colors wandering about. There was a particular beast that resided in the northern part of the land; the only one of his kind, to his knowledge. He was a quadruped with mostly lightly-colored fur adorned by light blue symbols and markings, a mane of medium-light grey, a tail with a cherub wing-like end, and massive paws. His eyes had black scleras, a piercing lighter blue iris, and black pupils. All in all, he appeared to be a distant relative to what we now know as the lion.
For as long as he could remember, he was the only living being in a frozen wasteland in the mortal realm. His memory did not go back far enough to remember how he came to be; only that he existed. There were times when he was younger that he would hear ominous whispers in the dark, in his dreams. However, although he feared them at first, he soon realized he could easily overcome them and put the fear into whatever, or whoever, the voices originated from. There would occasionally be some new whispers trying to get him to use his magic to do something for them, like open a 'door' or use his magic a certain way at a certain point in the mountains, but they never lasted long.
Over the years, he began to experiment with his magic; he found that it could be harnessed, while also discovering he could create just about anything he set his mind to, though his strong point seemed to be with anything ice- or snow-related. He created a cryophoenix to help keep watch of lands outside of the mountains, but still surrounded by ice and snow. She became a guardian in her own sense, having her own consciousness, feelings, and so forth, with an innate responsibility for the wellbeing of the lands. Many other experiments were able to be captured; in bottles made of ice that would never melt. Such things inside said bottles included a single lightning strike, an entire thunderstorm, an eternalish flame, and smaller things more for his own amusement; such as a flurry of petals, lights that would dance colorfully across the sky when released, and even just memories. During some of his few ventures barely out beyond his lair, he came across some unsettling or questionable forces at work, and decided to bottle those up, too, not wanting them to be widespread across the land. Like the cryophoenix he had created, there was something about this land that he felt obligated to look after.
Despite his mostly keeping to himself and not noticing life outside his lair, which consisted of a large amount of connected caves within the highest peak of one of the mountaintops, life began to flourish outside. Beyond plants, other living, breathing beings came into existence. Some had no sign of intelligence, while others were more bipedal and attempted to make tools. The ice and snow were his eyes and ears; through the smallest snowflake he could see and hear for miles around. He took a particular keen interest in a species known as the yeti; one yeti in particular stood out to him, and he oftentimes found himself looking for that yeti in particular to watch its progress. They were somewhat primal, but showed promise; and it made him wonder, what if I shared my magic with their kind? So, through some careful planning, he managed to lead the yeti he had an eye on, on an adventure -- which ended at the mouth of one of the lowermost cave entrances in the mountains.
The yeti is at first confused, but after being presented with a beautiful gem, magic, and with it, more wisdom and intelligence, flowed through him. The magic was restricted to just the ability to use ice and snow at their will, in addition to a boosted intelligence. Nothing quite on the level of the cryophoenix that he had created some time ago, as this was simply another experiment, just to see how things would turn out.
Mhagik, as the being called the yeti, would make frequent visits and would learn more and more about the magic that the being had passed on to him. It was the yeti who decided to give a name to the being; Valoran. Thanks to Valoran, the lands that were alongside the mountains began flourishing. Magic may have only been meant for the yetis, but what they were able to do with it caused a ripple effect on the surrounding lands as well. Vegetation boomed, yetis traveled, and humans had their first contact with those from the northernmost part of this land after some yetis began roaming.
Valoran took a liking to the yetis more and more each day; he was blind to what was happening beneath his very paws, turning an unintentional blind eye to what was happening nearby. Some humans migrated north. Their lifespans were fairly meager compared to the yetis. As the humans came and went and branched out with each new generation, there came a small, but dedicated, group of humans who wanted magic for their own. At that point in time, there were no other humans who had even a hint of magic in that area. As years went by, the humans plotted. Fire was a necessity to help keep warm, but it was also strong against snow and ice, causing both to melt when utilized properly; the humans knew this, and were biding their time, playing with fire.
Having never been around or close to another living being before, Valoran had his paws full with Mhagik. Mhagik was like a young puppy; seemingly endless energy, full of questions, and always getting into something when Valoran wasn't looking. Valoran at first wasn't sure how to act when Mhagik tried doing more silly things, like throwing a small ball of snow or dumping a load of snow on him unexpectedly. He knew it was in good fun and was doing his best to accommodate, going so far as to start pulling pranks sneakily on Mhagik; Mhagik showed him how to have fun in exchange for everything Valoran did not only for him, but for his entire species.
Valoran wasn't sure how much time had passed -- for him, time was irrelevant. Mhagik had definitely grown to a formidable size, though not nearly as large as Valoran. The humans had several villages along the base of the mountains and stretched out into the valleys. Most of the yetis still lived harmoniously with them, though some of the older yetis had decided to move further up the mountains, secluding themselves as best as they could, wary of the humans. Mhagik had become a bit of an icon amongst his own kind; he wasn't the leader, but he was mostly respected within their community, though he had a different name that others called him; Willump.
