If we are successful, you will stand a light in the darkness. You will be a flame hot enough to burn away the evil of this world, but gentle enough to nurture the innocent. Do not be afraid- you have a blessed destiny.

But Adyre, as the little demi was known then, did not want this blessed destiny. She had been hand-picked for this as a kitten by an agent of the oracle, and separated from the rest of her family before her eyes were even open. The agent had named her for a word in the Saheric tongue that meant "light." She'd been raised in one of the many small temples that dotted the Sacred Land, educated in all things mystical and divine. And now, on the cusp of her coming of age, she was finally deemed ready for the destiny she had so long been groomed for. She had been raised all her life with the understanding that she was merely the vessel of a higher calling, and here on the cusp of finding that calling, she stood ready.

When she learned what it was she was to do, however, she balked. In the temple at all times there burned the Sacred Flame of Shinwa, a white fire that burned without fuel, that could not be extinguished by anything save the hand of the goddess herself. They would use ancient magic to bond the flame to Adyre's soul, making her a living embodiment of the Sacred Flame that would be able to go out into the world and use it for good. Adyre was frightened, though- surely what they were proposing would just kill her? The temple folk insisted the flames would never harm an innocent, and despite her misgivings the young demi agreed to allow the procedure. She'd known these people her whole life- she had no reason to mistrust them, and she had been taught all her life that this was the reason for her existence.

As she stood upon the altar and stepped into the brazier where the fire burned, at first all seemed to be well. Adyre stood still, her eyes closed, as the temple kin chanted and the flames lapping harmlessly at her fur were drawn into a brightly glowing point at the center of her chest. When the last of the flames had vanished, for a moment there was silence. Then, abruptly, Adyre flung her head back, opening her mouth in a cry of pain that was joined by a tornado of flame. Every inch of her body glowed white-hot, her mane crackling with flame, and she blindly jumped out of the brazier and fled the room. Every pawstep left a bloom of fire in it's wake, so that by the time Adyre had thrown herself out into the open air, half of the temple that had once been her home was ablaze. She could distantly hear screams of fear and confusion behind her, but she was in no state to pay them any heed. She kept running, leaving a trail of glassed over sand in her wake. Half-mad with pain, she ran on long into the day, until the sun had set and the moon started to rise and she was too exhausted to continue. The demi collapsed in the sand, watching white fire slowly burn a ring of glass all around her agonized body and barely caring. She just wanted it to stop.

She was saved by the arrival of one of the Saheric Sand Spirits. It appeared to her, a mirage in the moonlight, and put a cool hand upon her blazing forehead. "You are not strong enough yet for this power. I cannot undo the binding that has joined it to you, but I can seal it until you are ready." There was a flash of blue, and Adyre fell into a blessed, painless sleep. When she woke, it was morning, and the pain was gone... but the fire was not.

She burned with more organic, orange and yellow embers now, but she still burned. It frightened her, and the fear of what she'd done to her home combined with the sense of betrayal that her guardians had very nearly killed her drove the demi to flee far into the desert. As she travelled alone, the previously pampered young demi learned to hunt and forage and fend for herself. She learned to wield her weakened fire magic, both to defend herself and to render it harmless to those who meant no harm to her. And she eventually discarded her old name, choosing to go by Addy instead.

Eventually, after several years on her own, the significantly jaded Addy found herself wandering the forests of Shadowglen. Unused to the local diseases, she fell ill and collapsed, only to wake after days of delirium to the startling sight of a ghost hovering over her as she lay in the first real bed she'd used since fleeing the temple. The ghost- Shinko- explained that her friend Xocolatl had found Addy in the forest and brought her here, and together the ghost and the bovyne had managed to use the contents of the library- the building Addy now found herself in- to concoct a cure. While she was still recovering from the illness, Addy's wariness of her rescuers was gradually replaced by an odd sort of wistfulness. She hadn't had real company, real friends, in such a long time... And she wasn't sure she wanted to leave once she had healed. Upon confessing this, she was surprised to find that the ghost was more than happy to open the library to her- Xoco was already living there, and the spirit was often lonely.

In the years since, Xocolatl has since left the library to start xyr own bakery, but Addy is still living there, trying to sort herself out...

Addy identifies as demigirl, and will answer to she/her or they/them pronouns interchangeably.
