Hey there!
The name's Wheeke,
and this is my tale.

I was born into a pretty big family, being the last of my 38 siblings. Vivid colors are important where I come from, and much of my family were artisans: dyemakers and dyers, weavers and crafters of showy, brilliant things.

But only me...
Out of all my kinfolk, I was the only one born with white fur.

From the first moment I could understand, I was told that this was something shameful and terrible, to be strictly kept secret.

White was the opposite of valuable. White was the color of sickness and death, of wasted potential.
White could mean my family's end.

My ma was insistent on keeping my appearance hidden. I don't think that even some of my siblings knew. Twice a week she'd fuss over my fur, slathering it with dye and wax...

...And she made me wear tinted goggles to hide my red eyes.

On the second worst day of my life, my awful secret was revealed.

I was out too soon,
and the dye hadn't fully set.
I don't recall so much about the splash that soaked me, but I do remember the dark spatters as I shook it off, and the oily-looking puddle around my feet.
And then the embarrassing stares from the group I was with.

I ran like hell -- of course I did -- but the damage had been done.
I had been seen, and nothing would be the same again.

And on the very worst day of my life,
my family declared me dead.

I didn't want to believe it could truly come to this. What had changed, really? Not me, I was still me!

But no matter how I pleaded or protested, no one would listen.

They wrapped me in burial linens and held a funeral for me.
It was weird seeing so much of my family in the same place all at once and not being allowed to speak with them, knowing I never would again.

Instead of burying me when it was done, they sent me adrift in a small bare boat. After all, despite how it felt, it's not like they wanted me dead, just... not there anymore.

If I made it, I'd simply start a new life someplace else.

Someone else's curse.
Someone else's bad omen.
Someone else's unfortunate burden.

They'd taken away all of my things, but I kept a single item with me:
a wonderfully iridescent ring that I smuggled under my tongue.

I didn't have any more reason to mourn my family than they had to mourn me, but I kept this as a treasure to remember the colors.

Those, I would actually miss.

Jeronimus Rudy Trombonicus

A truly upbeat rat, when Jeronimus Trombonicus isn't blowing his horn, he's serving up toast. And no matter what you're putting down, he's always ready to pick it up, pick it up, pick it up.

Tickler

I once met this rat called the Tickler

Who fancied himself the finest French pickler

With the strangest of brines

And makeshift alkalines

He's made it as a cornichon bricoleur

Iemon

This guy was very sour about it the first time Niblet suddenly squeezed him, but these days I think he just hangs out amongst the lemons so he can sometimes steal a free hug.

Niblet

A sunny-dispositioned rat who's always surrounded by the smell of citrus, in her days of seafaring she learned to make a mean scurvy-fightin' lemonade, and she still offers it to everyone she meets.

Coumarin

Some people's idea of being prepared is knowing where your towel is, but this guy's philosophy is to always know where your spoon is, just in case there's tasty nibbles to be sampled.

I like the way he thinks, hehe.

These guys have a seemingly endless hoard of cool old stuff that they love to give away. I've been lucky enough to nab the occasional treat myself, haha!
