There was a time many, many years ago, that the world lived in relative peace. There were many who rose to and fell from power, using soldiers and other living beings as stepping stones to get to where they wanted to be, leaving mounds upon mounds of corpses in their wake. Magic wasn't always prominent, but as the world and its inhabitants evolved... so did their abilities to learn and control new things. Some good came of it, but other times nothing but bad came of it. While some used their magical knowledge to heal others and enhance certain attributes for making every day work easier; others caused corpses to rise from from their graves for a short time, eventually to the point of having undead servants at their beck and call. Some of these dark magic beings used dark magic on themselves so that, even in death, they would live on.

There were droves of undead that went about their lives as they would have as though they were still living; most had been dedicated to cleaning or protecting something that was now a part of a tomb. They simply continued that, warding off any would-be adventurers and making sure that their masters resting place was spick and span, should they decide to stir.

As goes with most things, there are exceptions... there isn't a single being who is all-knowing when it comes to magic. I would not be able to describe myself, even if I could speak in a way others understood. I know I'm undead. But I don't know what my purpose is. What memories I once had are long gone, lost with the ages. I now wander the lands eternally; never sleeping, never able to communicate. I have been the cause of death for many adventurers, though not by choice. I don't want to harm them, and although I technically can't die, I do still feel some degree of pain and trying to put myself back together after making it appear as though I was 'defeated' is... rather bothersome.

I've had some companions over the years. Mostly the 4-legged kind. I'm able to use some magic; mostly conjuring type things, to summon other undead or skeletons for my benefit. I have made peace with some 4-legged canines over the years by providing bones for them to chew on from skeletons I summon, or by offering a freshly-killed carcass of an animal as a meal to them and any members of a pack it may be a part of. Unfortunately, these days it feels as though as soon as I befriend a canine or other animal... it's not long after that I am left alone again, dealing with another adventurer, bringing their life to an end or allowing myself to be defeated and lay in shambles for an undetermined amount of time. However... I recently met an adventurer who seemed a little unsure of themselves. They saw me and I saw them; they weren't innately hostile towards me; more, they were terrified and looked like they hoped I wouldn't take notice of them and keep moving. Although I did take notice of them and we locked eyes for a while -- seconds, minutes? Who knows -- I simply turned the other way and kept shambling along, not even going to draw my weapon. I have felt them watching me ever since, but I dare not approach them, lest I start a fight or flight reaction and end up having to end their adventuring days.

It's the first time in who knows how long that I have felt something other than loneliness or longing... perhaps hope is a way to describe what I am feeling? Hope that I can finally be understood and that perhaps I can be one step closer to discovering my purpose...
